If your not living life on the edge your taking up too much room, personally I would be using an impact socket as already suggested

Needs must.

You could’ve satisfied the HSE requirements and uprated it with a jubilee clamp round the socket

If I could find my 46mm 1" drive impact I would have used it. I hate losing tools

I've been using standard sockets on impacts for years and never had one shatter, I've had lots crack up the side though. The chrome plating peeling off is the only danger I've found.

Main difference with impact sockets is the sidewall is thicker.
Main risk from a standard chrome plated socket is the chrome flaking off and shards of it being projected around.

Yes and razor sharp too..i have had a flake of chromium under my nail before today
