Log splitter oil tank size

Hi I am building a log splitter using a ram 4 inch thick by about 700mm long rod is around 2 inch thick extended full length is around 1200mm my question is what size oil tank would I need for this running it off a 5. 5HP engine and a 8 gpm pump. Would a 300x300mm tank be OK thank you

If you can pump the ram full of oil then push the oil out into a container you can measure how much the ram needs then add in an amount for the pump and hoses then just add a little extra capacity

Correct.

Normal method is about 2 times the flow rate so 16 gallons or 58L.

However I think your 8gpm pump has far to much flow for just a splitter.

Will you have a full bypass till the lever is pulled or rely on the pressure release valve (which will over heat the oil)?

58l that sounds a bit big my bosses old Smalley towable digger doesn't even have a tank that big

That's why the size of the pump was questioned.

It's just what Flow fit advised me to get a 8 gpm hi low pump for the 5.5 HP engine

That engine will stall as soon as it comes up against a log with those flow rates.

I think my firewood processor has about 8gpm but that is also running the chainsaw & conveyor as well as the splitter.

It also has a GX390 which I think is 13hp.

The tank on that is about the size I quoted & in use the oil gets up to 70c ish or more.

If it's a high low pump what are the flow rates at both height and low settings?

I assume its self controlling so the splitter comes out and back in quick but slows and ups the power when in contact with the log.
