log splitting "cone"

afternoon all.

I was going to make a hydraulic log splitter, but looking at all sorts of pics and reports im going for the screw type splitter as I have the where with all to make one lying about.

the only thing I aint got is one of those threaded cones, does anyone know where I can get one cheaper than 80 knicker, or could one of use make me one???

I made one to go on the fergie PTO. Works lovely. Material cost me £20 and about an hour of machining time. then some 10mm triangular m/s tigged onto it in a spiral. Might have some pics on my old phone.

Dont forget you need an instant stop that can be activated whilst you hand is getting smashed by the jammed log.

lol, logs, rounds will be on a flat bed with various stops to stop the logs trying to fly.

far from stupid here, just enjoy making my own kit as I know it will be better than I can buy.

My neighbour has one for his tractor. Thinks it is the most dangerous bit of kit he has seen....and that is after using it. It has been gathering dust for many years.

Yes I rejected the screw type in favour of the hydraulic cylinder / descending wedge type after I saw a screw type working. Not only are they potentially lethal, they don't cope with knotty timber as well. At least the hydraulic one can be implemented so the wedge only moves relatively slowly, with the screw type there is so much energy stored up in the rotating bits, if things go wrong there'll be no stopping it.

The screw splitters ARE dangerous...you should take it as a challenge, build a screw splitter that is clutched......


Shouldn't be that hard?

the thing is does anyone know of a place that sells these cones?? or could one be made by the lathe men on here??

There is a Polish fellow who advertises them regularly on eBay - but I still would not advise their use

Have you considered a flywheel type splitter? Seen one used to very good effect. Just as dangerous I guess, but you could make it much safer with guards etc.
