Looking to build a cyclone dust extractor

hi,

i'm looking to build a general perpose cyclone dust extractor, i'm fed up with working in a garage that gets filled with dust everytime i work. i do use dusts masks but they are annoying to wear constantly
At the moment i'm in a middle of restoring a fiat uno turbo and want to build a suitable extraction system for when i blast grind cut and weld.

any suggestions will be very much appreciated

Hi Selftaught, cyclones are deceiving because they have no moving parts and therefore appear simple but getting the proprotions correct is very involved. You could design it from first principles with lots of maths or you could copy one that is knwon to work well. A visit to your local timeber yard may be useful.

thanks nivag but i will base mine on one that works
has any1 got any pictures of there extract equipment i could use to gather some ideas
maybe theres a better system i could use than the cyclone.
trying to keep costs low for an adequate system

If you look at blast cabinet posts[about a year ago?] there was a pic of a Guyson[?] cabinet with a cyclone extractor. Ask the bloke for better pic's and if you get them send me copies;-) I almost got a broken Dyson from freecycle, I thought a look at one would be a good start.

There was a home-made one described on this forum a couple of years ago - could well be worth a try.

Theres plans around, someone asked me to make them one a couple of years ago. Might have some luck if you check UKWorkshop forum, they seem popular with the woodworking guys.

Cyclones are not that good at collecting grinding dust, except when it has landed on surfaces, but they are good for bigger bits (planer shavings and sawdust if extracted close to the source.

Far better to look at air filtration system for the fine stuff from grinding etc.
have a look at Axminster.co.uk - they have these type of units and you can get some spec info and also sources of filtration.

Hmm beg to differ, Cyclones are used to collect dusts much finer and less dense than grinding dust. The proportions of the cyclone and the gas velocity determine the dust collecting characteristics.
Cyclones have been used for many years in industrial pollution control at power stations, iron and aluminium works. The types associated with the wood working industry have been typically very low efficiency due to the poor design.

on the contrary the density and size of metal grinding dust is ideally suited to a well designed cyclone. I would suggest you study one mr Dysons products.

Most cyclones are used as the primary dust eliminator followed with secondary filter. In a powerstation that would be an electrostatic precipitator, in an aluminium works a fluidised bed scrubber. Mr Dyson uses fabric filter, but the efficiency of the cyclone means it only needs cleaning once a month.

If you have a lower density, finer particle size or incorrect airflow for the cyclone design you will get "carry over". For those who like to experiment, airborne plaster dust from sanding plaster will block a Dyson secondary filter in about 30 minutes.
