Lorch Handy 160

Hi all,

After much deliberation, I have finally decided that a Lorch Handy 160 is the Arc/Tig welder for me. That being said, does anyone know what the 'OCV' value is for this machine, also, it appears that this particular machine is generally sold without cables, so does anyone know what size Dinse cable plug it takes?

Any help will be most appreciated.

Hi David,

OCV is 85v.

I cannot remember the size in mm but there are 2 sizes for welding machines and the Handy 160 takes the larger of the 2.

The Lorch H150 has 35-50 dinse sockets so the larger 160 should be the same.

I understand from postings on this Forum that you are the man to talk to about Lorch and so I am very glad that you have replied to my query, thank you.

I have found a couple of England based web sites/companies that are selling the Lorch Handy 160 (machine only) for £594.00 (inc VAT) but cannot find anyone who is selling the machine plus Arc and Tig Welding Package (Case, Welding lead, Earth lead, Valved Tig torch, Gas Hose and Regulator) for a sensible/reasonable price. The only company I have found that is selling the machine plus 'package' is selling the 'package' for £238.80 (inc VAT) but shockingly the Machine is priced at £765.90 (inc VAT)! My question is therefore, can the 'package' be bought separately and if yes, do you know where I can get it at a reasonable price?

Failing the successful purchase of the 'package' and therefore following on from my original post. The larger size dinse connector is designed to accept 35mm to 50mm cable. Which size cable would you recommend for the Handy 160?

Thank you for your reply.

A kind of follow on question regarding cables. Is there any difference in machine performance with regard to cable length? In an ideal world, I would like to have a cable lenght of say 5m - 6m but would that detract from performance of the machine as compared to if my cable was only 3m?

I'm not too sure if a 6m cable would make that much difference.
I use leads of around 2 or 3m and just move the inverter closer to the job with an extension lead.

Thanks, I think on reflection that it is perhaps better (and cheaper) to use your method. So 3m cable is the order of the day.

Longer leads could cause a issue as regards voltage drop, but that would be on huge leads, as on 70-80 meters worth maybe even more, the difference between 3 to 6 wouldn't make any odds at all.

Ref the price for the assembly pack, email the companies you have seen a price for the machine only and ask then for there best deal.
