Lorch ?

Just considering a new welder for the shop : 500 amps mig pulsed water cooled .

Got more brands on my mind and going to test them all , but I've seen online some videos about special processes from Lorch ( pretty close to Ewm's ones ) , seems a good brand with good machines .

We weld at 95% structural steel , machines and plants parts , in general steel carpentry for mechanical industries , so high penetration and low heat processes without surface prep looks damn good to us ( force arc vs speed pulse vs others ) but also others for low thickness tubes and plates .

The targets are : high penetration clearly , no surface prep or finishing after welding , no spatters , great welds looking , faster welding , less heat transfered to the piece ( = less re-working ) , thickness from 2-3 mm to 50 mm ( plates , tubes , beams and so on )

Anyone tested Lorch and their special welding processes ?

For the material thickness ranges you mentioned a combination of 2 processes would give the best results.

SpeedPulse-XT which is a modified Pulse range, to give higher deposition rates and deeper penetration levels.

SpeedArc-XT is a modified spray arc, which also offers deeper penetration and potentially higher deposition rates.

The difference on when you would use either would typically come on which material Thickness your welding at that point in time. SpeedArc is really beneficial on material thicknesses where you have enough voltage to reach a spray arc, so wouldn’t be beneficial on your thinner sections. Force Arc is also a modified Spray arc so it’s more comparable to our SpeedArc rather than SpeedPulse

Both processes have the option for adjusting the arc dynamics which in effect makes the arc more aggressive and more focussed. Increasing the dynamics helps to “burn” through any surface contaminants.

Thanks , some days ago I've discovered that one of our suppliers is a local reseller for Lorch ( he never mentioned that ! )

I'm going to multiple brands tests and demos in February and see which is the best for me

Just because I'm too curious : looking online I've seen that Ewm and Lorch have been the firsts to develope high penetration processes , both approximately 10 years ago - but who has been first ??? Who has patented that technology first ???

As far as I know, high deposition Mig/Mag welding in some form or another has been around since the 80’s.

I think that a Swedish gas company called Aga (no longer existing) were one of the first, but it was only working with a special gas mix, from memory I think they partnered with Fronius and it was sold as the T.I.M.E process and the gas was called

The original SpeedArc was bought to market around 2008 along with the original SpeedPulse. The improved XT versions of both processes was launched around 2016. Many manufacturers also have a some form of High deposition processes. Some better than others.

I’d encourage you to try as many as possible for comparison.
