M17 equivalent bolt

Hi guys and gals,

So what iv got is a push bike wheel with a bearing that is 17mm, what I'm after is some bolts that will fit said bearing, snug but not too snug that it can't be pulled out when I need to repair/ change the wheel.

My mind can't cope with imperial at best od times let alone unf unc bsf bsm etc (i know ehat they stand for that's about it)

i would prefer fine thread but im open to options.

Of and they need to be 140mm long

why not just go m14 and make a sleeve ,,, depends on what your trying to do really

There's likely to be motorcycle axles of that diameter, too long but they could be shortened.

What you are asking is difficult for a number of reasons.

1. M17 is very, very non-standard. Maybe you would find one on a very obscure French car of which only three exist in the world.

2. Nearest imperial equivalent is 11/16", which is a smidge under 17 1/2mm so too big. This is also non-standard but at least two standard threads in this diameter are available (UNEF and obsolete BSF & BSW). However, to push it through the hole, you'd have to remove some of the threads so no good.

3. Presumably the bolt has to thread into something, so you need a nut with a female thread to suit the bolt.

4. Any bolt in any size is not very round and not very precise on diameter. It will be a sloppy fit in the bearing. See dimension 'A' here: https://www.thomassmithfasteners.com/technical/

5. As above, your best bet is a smaller bolt and a sleeve to make it up to 17mm. M14 is a non-preferred size, so M12 would be cheaper. You could JB Weld the sleeve to the bolt so the diameter tolerance on the bolt does not cause any slop (the sleeve + bolt as an assembly would remove from the bearing inner as you wish).

6. For a one piece assembly, pick a shoulder bolt like these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164779824494 but you would have to buy one with a 20mm plain diameter and get it turned down to 17mm. The M16 thread on it would not be touched.

Quite a lot of mountain bikes use a 15mm Through-Axle on front forks, and 12mm rear - so bicycle wheel bearings to fit are commonly available if that helps.

A big shoulder bolt with a reduced diameter thread on the end (for easy nut procurement)

If you have a lathe it probably is.. I don't

Might be an option, il grab the numbers from current bearing and check sizes etc.

Looks to be 17x28x7mm,
So needs to be 28diameter 7mm width, found a few online for not much money (and it's not my money anyway for somebody else)

I feel its pretty exotic with my small tinker shed having a Pillar Drill, a Welder and a Compressor in it

Whats the purpose? will the bolt be a push bike axle? In which case you may want a better grade of steel and drilled through to save some weight as M17 that long will be heavy!

Easy to turn up a few fine pitch m17 threads.

It's for a recumbent bike that iv been asked to make, the wheels he provided.
I think standard 8.8 should deal with the loads at hand,
Iv ordered some new bearings for the wheels that should accept an m12 bolt
