M6 Rivnut Stud?.

Hello all.

I have a bit of an odd problem with having to fix a stud with a rivenut or similar in a 12mm deep hole.

I have tried the following but bailed out as the m6×1.0 thread did not like tightening up enough to crimp the modified Rivenut.

If I could have pulled the stud straight up (like the Rivnut tool does) it would have worked a treat..

I have a setting tool with "normal" M8x1.25 receiver for the Rivenut dies so I was thinking of making an adapter (male M8 to female M6).

I only need 2 studs to be mounted but don't mind spending the time to make it a proper job, where they are going it will be a one shot deal really to get it fitted.

I can see me spending the afternoon trying to drill down an M8 bolt but any suggestions welcome!.

Easy option, can you not put a very slim m6 nut on some m6 studding and loctite it into a normal rivnut with say green bearing lock?
Less easy option, they actually make proper rivstuds that are designed to collapse like you want with a specific weak spot. https://www.libertyeng.com/products/rivstud/
The difference to your setup is the stud is welded to the inside of the rivnut holding it stationary.

Not quite sure what you're doing, but that'll be my comprehension I expect.

But yes, using the threads of the thing you're rivnutting to compress the rivnut ruins them. If you step it up, with something like that^ you can get a fairly compact tool that doesn't destroy itself in the process.

Just to clarify I have a stud inserted with the head in the bottom of the modified Rivenut.

I need to apply upward force to this when fitted into it's hole, ton crimp the Rivnut part.

The Rivstuds are 15mm (too deep) so I am looking for a Rivstud setting tool (or to make my own) to set my custom made M6 Rivstuds.

I think the best bet is to make something to fit my heavy duty Rivenut setting tool.

Why not just use the standard rivnut as you have them, and then permanent loctite in a socket head set screw (grubscrew) of suitable length?

I have done that already with the other 6, the problem I have here is I have to cut the Rivenut down to allow it to fully drop into the 12mm hole and I'm not happy there is enough thread left really.

I've ordered some M8 to M6 thread adapters ( like a fat Timesert really).

I can then mount my home made Rivstood in the tool and crimp it properly.

It's the depth of the hole (12mm) that's the issue.

How about using a 6mm tube nut and a sleeve over that? Should be able to use the tool you have without pulling the threads on either the tool or stud, just thoughts.

That's what I've ordered, the adapter will screw in my Rivenut tool, my stud will thread into that and then I can set my home made Rivstud.

Been a bit of a ballache really.

M6 major diameter = 6mm. Pitch = 1.0mm
M8 tapping drill (approx. minor diameter) = 6.75mm Pitch = 1.25mm
Subtract 6.00 from 6.75 and divide by two. Rather thin wall.

The adaptor would work better if you started with the M10 Rivnut nose.

The adapter will be sandwiched between the Rivenut tool boss (M8) and the M6 stud, approx 20mm of thread engagement so hopefully it will be good enough to pull the Rivenut.

Apologies, I didn't read the question thoroughly enough.

I have had success in the past by pulling the nut up, then pushing the head down, pulling it again - so the fitted length fits, not the uncompressed length.

No problem, it's a bit hard to explain!.

I did try your method with a standard length rivenut but it started to deform the nut above the surface of the hole and a little tap with the nylon hammer didn't persuade it down.

Hopefully I can get them in relatively easily when the adapters turn up as it will be real pain to try and remove them.

All the others went really easily, I fitted studs after setting them in as I prefer a stud and nut fitting.

It's for a pair of battery trays, I'm loathe to digging the welder out really as there's no rust at all at the moment and I don't want to start melting the paint if I can help it..

Spent today running new battery cables and managed to fit the home made riv-studs.

Passenger side went a treat, drivers side was another story.

I'd set the stud and it felt fine but for some reason I gave it another squeeze with the heavy duty rivenut tool and snapped the bloomin stud!.

I was ready to pack in at that point and go in for a pint but ended up drilling it all out and starting again, 2nd time lucky..

I've got a bit of rivnut now floating about in the chassis which has peed me off but I've decided to draw a line under it and move on lol.
