Mag drill to super pillar drill..

I purchased a mag drill on recommendation but unfortunately for me it wasn’t really suitable. I needed a rotabroach option yes, but also a drill for my bench, one where I could position my vice under it, the magnetic base stopped this, so, I modified what is already a wonderful work tool.. The control panel is now worktop mounted with the magnet fitted below the steel workbase, I fitted it to an adjustable height column with adj braces and stabilisers, cooling fluid is retained and an old led re chargeable cycle lamp illuminates the work piece.. Best thing now is a rock solid platform which is adjustable and the workpiece can now move freely under the column..
Below the worktop is a removable tray to capture dwarf and fluids etc..

In my eyes it’s sacrilege that you now cannot use your Magnetic drill for drilling up a ladder or a long piece of column, for small pieces of steel I just clamp a piece of angle in My vice and stick the mag drill onto the angle and put the work piece between angle and front jaw, I shall get round to making a proper stand with guides for drilling rails and stops etc. so I can just slacken two bolts, switch the magnet off and remove the drill!

That’s a great idea, if that’s what works for you, brilliant..As said it’s not for me though, I’m never going to need to drill a beam and certainly never climb a ladder with it.. For me, space is very limited, I was really disappointed with the smaller pillar drills for their inaccuracy and wobbles etc, I needed a solid accurate bench drill. This gives me that and more now...

However, if I was to suddenly get into the sport of ladder climbing with a drill at the age of 57? Do you know what? I’d go buy a second one..

It was basically a _|---|_ shape, which was fitted over the rear jaw of a standard vice, bolted to the some surface thevice was mounted too, the horizontal part was about 10mm thick, and was about the size of the drill magnet.
Yuo could put the drill on the horizontal platform, turn on the magnet, and then drill anything clamped in the vice jaws. This was ideal for drilling lots of holes in long but narrow pieces on which the magnet does not have enough holding power.

I have my vice mounted on a heavy tripod, was thinking of making some sort of frame that bolted on and off that would hold the mag drill and a fence that you could do longitudinal drilling of lengths of steel and have a chamfered pin to locate the last drilled hole to save measuring!

It’s really good on small stuff and small holes, I do a lot of bike bits n pieces Tbf hence the smaller stuff.. I didn’t like how the control board was mounted at the rear of the machine it left me fumbling blind like John Cleese looking for a light switch...
