Mains water pressure

Whats an acceptable mains water pressure? I am getting 6 bar/90PSI and am wondering if this is a tad high and whether I should fit a pressure regulating valve.

Just turn the stop tap down till the cold water doesn't bounce out and soak you.

well you wont need a pressure washer with your finger over the end of the hose pipe

I’d fit a 3 bar pressure reducing valve. Will also help even out the pressure as outlets are opened.

Pressure limiting valves are available, preset at 50psi (maybe other values as well?)

I don't know if there is any need for one for yourself? A lot of commercial places (pubs) have them fitted to protect kit in the cellars

that wouldn't stop the initial build up till it lowered flow

its going to cause problems with any modern boiler you fit, most want 3 bar max.
turning down the stopcok doesnt reduce the pressure just the flow.

I had to fit one for the inlaws, their combi boiler and shower kept popping seals and other plastic internals. We didnt realise it was so high until one of the engineers did a pressure check on something like his third warranty call

To be fair he still fixed it but said he would bill them if he came back and we hadnt fitted a pressure regulator.

In our previous house we had 300psi, we told the people we sold to, to fit a pressure reducer, they didn’t listen & fitted a pressure fed hot water system & boiler. It burst the rads, split the cylinder & wrote off the boiler before it was ever lit. They tried to blame me, I laughed, I did warn them that there was 600 foot head!

Combi should cope fine with 6bar, all water related items unless stated or supplied with a pressure reducer have to be able to cope with 10bar.

Pressure builds up when you turn the tap off, when you turn it on the initial pressure will go and then the flow restrictedw will limit it to what ever the boiler is rated to, if you were up around 9 then I would be considering a reducer but not at 6

Ours was about the same. Had to fit a PRV for the washing machine and dishwasher. Everything else was fine.

Fifteen years ago, My son bought an old Victotian house that needed everything doing to it, When we connected the mains water the pressure was tremendous, The pumping station was only half a mile away, Checked it out with a pressure gauge, 200psi, fitted a reducer to get it down to a much more acceptable level, Its been OK ever since, but never known mains pressure so high,

Fifteen years ago, My son bought an old Victotian house that needed everything doing to it, When we connected the mains water the pressure was tremendous, The pumping station was only half a mile away, Checked it out with a pressure gauge, 200psi, fitted a reducer to get it down to a much more acceptable level, Its been OK ever since, but never known mains pressure so high,

more chance of getting a burst and more damage what the water board were doing round our way was renewing all the old iron pipes with plastic . using a smaller bore pipe they fed them through the existing cast pipes and upped the pressure to compensate. a fair few houses had burst pipes because of it

Over 10bar is waterboards problem as nothing domestic is designed or warranted above that, I have a site that regularly exceeds 9 but never had above 10, in all the years I've debt with it it's caused a problem with 1 boiler.

About a decade ago my parents neighbours lost water at the farm - not great with over 400 head of milking cattle. Welsh Water quadrupled the mains pressure down to our farm (we had the main junction for the area) which is great in the yards but caused havoc with the plumbing in the house. Dad fitted a pressure reducing valve as it came into the house but left the rest of the farm at full pressure.
