Hello,
I quite fancy making my own toolbox. I planned to draw it up on CAD get all the draws laser cut, and the box itself. Then of course I could TIG it all together.
I think i'm going to make it all from stainless steel, and possibly powdercoat it afterwards.
The top I'd probably make 5-6mm thick, use solid wood (some snapon boxes have 20mm of wood on the top and look really smart) Or use granite depending how big I make the box.
I could simply go out and buy a StrapOn box but there not "brilliant" in terms of quality (i've got a couple already) and anything else looks like you've gone cheap. (I'm talking about a rollcab not top box, and for what I want its around £10k to buy) This is my trade I feel things like tools and boxes make a different to the overall "feel".
I'm not 100% if I want it to lock, everybody who works for me and visits can use my tools.
I would ideally like a latch mechanism on the toolbox to keep the draws shut if we move it around. I also considered making 2-3 boxes which connect together so they can be moved to the "job".
What I'm looking for is some good quality rollers for the draws. You can easily put 50-60kg in a draw. I don't mind spending to get these but want the best quality possible. For the latch mechanism I want something simple but again don't mind getting something machined. Along with the draw fronts, I thought about machined alloy fronts to the draws bolted onto the backs.
I have a budget of anything less than a Snapon box. I.e. £9900 should it need to be so long as the finished product is better than the actual box. So don't mind spending a couple of grand at the local machine shop to get the draw fronts.
Any input welcome on idea's to latch the draws. Possibly lock them, Casters, rollers for draws. Etc etc.
