Making your own linisher abrasive band belts from a bulk roll of it .

I often help Fizzy down at his place , one of the things he's found is certain long abrasive belts for his industrial vertical linisher are expensive . I too have found the same when I want a harder belts for my small linisher .

Both of us have seen some YouTube vids of jointing the new cut to size abrasive belts up . If any of you have successfully done this would you lease tell us what adhesive or flexible adhesive super sticky tape you used & where you got it from .

Mean time I've ordered a few sorts of tape from Temu and will experiment on my machine with some old well worn belts , I'm also thinking of using flexible nylon ( melted cable ties in a simple bolt up home made press when it's just at the nylon melt point on n the pressure plates with nylon between the chamfered scarfed lapped joint to fuse it together .

Custom linisher belts

Now I have my brilliant Zimmermann profile sander / linisher up and running I need some belts for it. Width 48mm or possibly 50mm (2"). Length 2650mm or now 2740mm or 108" - I assume it has stretched a bit. Is this a normal sort of size or custom? Any suggestion where to buy some?

Sanding Belt Jointing Tape

I've got some powerfile belts butt joined with a fibreglass reinforced tape. Does anyone know where to buy it?

Wont work. Unless you are extremely precise with nylon temperature control it turns brittle and is not going to like bending.

You could sew them with kevlar thread as another option, if its a cloth backed belt.

Isocyante containing permenent rubber adhesive would likely do the job. Or a rubber contact adhesive.

Agro shield . I'd like to keep this post seperate from the other posts as it to do with discovering what is eventually successful. I have a digital infra red thermometer & heating pad so several experiments will be done.
I have also got high temp rubberized cloth curing glue tape on its way for further experiments

Try some of the major abrasive manufacturer's websites and you might find something useful.

You can buy the proper tape from Aliexpress, but you also need the glue and heat press and the equipment to prepare (thin down) the area where the tape goes:

Yes, that is indeed the $6m question (or $6 question if only we could find it on Ali) and is your homework for the weekend.

The Ali link to the tape is to a bona fide Chinese abrasive manufacturer so might be a good starting point.

If you are interested in finding out, let your fingers do the walking and do some research for yourself. The more people who wander around looking for answers, the more likely it is an answer will be found.

As above, the same tape is sold via Amazon so tracing that back to its original supplier is another option for self-discovery.

i have tried using diffrent glues ,araldite epoxy. gorrilla glue etct both with good results just wanted to know wot the manafacturers used to no avail unless you know diffrent

Sounds interesting ... will be searching for fibre glass tape later tonight along with that glue .
Have been playing at making a simple cutting jig and am thinking of using a fine Dremel cutting blade to cut the belt , I might also make a simple wooden or Delrin pully pair screwed to a board or bolted to a drilled to size old bedstead angle iron I just took possession of that's over 6 foot six long to get the correct lengths when glued up. If I come across some punched racking up rights or Dexcom angles & use them as the bed irons are likely to be reused if at all possible

I am not sure belt length is too critical. The quoted lengths are nominal, and probably +/- 10mm would be well within the adjustment on the machine. Remember that on a continuous belt, effectively the adjuster only sees half any error in the belt's linear length.

I would be making them on the long side, so if I screwed up the joint, I might have another go at it without having to scrap 6+ feet of sandpaper.

Thanks I'm not given much thought to the length.
I'll be actually be measuring round all pully's on the test rig . If I mess up a joint I can insert a foot or longer length and remake the belt .

I have ordered three 1 mtr long rolls of butt jointing tape 10 mm wide specifically made for making cloth or paper backed abrasive bands , due in from China by 9 Dec.

We already have 3 x 10 mtr rolls of red aluminium oxide abrasive band in 80 , 180 & 320 grits.

Been considering ways of getting the scarfed butt joint precise so the band is the right length when taped up . will be using a mitre marking gauge and cut it on a very decent bench shear along the line then wrap it wrong side round out round the pullies with the tensioner off draw the second mitre in fine pencil and take it to the shear to cut it precisely & squarely then joint it as per the tape up instructions .

Having just viewed the how to do it Tube video that Gaz put up.....
I think I will make a simple 16 mm x 16 mm by 55 mm long billet of aluminium and drill it longitudinally it to take my small Antex electric soldering iron to make a simple hot melt heater plate .
As I can easily read the temp for when the tape melts ( 263 oC ??? ) & fuses in a test piece of new belting using my recently acquired digital thermal infrared temp gauge .

Clamping the joint well as it cools will probably extend its life.

I think a few sample joints at the beginning as you suggest will be very useful to refine the process.

Perhaps not only test them in a straight pull but also wrap around something maybe half the diameter of the smallest roller on the machine and see how the join fails.

I'd do different sample joint types on one belt, run it and see which one is best when the worst breaks.

The method you describe will only find the weakest link in the chain. All you know after it breaks is that all the remaining joints are stronger than the one which broke. It is impossible to say of any remaining one that it is better than any other one.

A series of short (material efficient) belts run on a test rig and timed to failure would identify unambiguously which jointing method had the longest life.
