The porch at the front of the house has been in need of finishing off, for a longtime, HID is constantly on my back about it. So the other day I found a company to lay a resin bead finish. Only problem is they wanted 450quid to cover 4sq mtr. managed to knock them down to 240. if I fitted the border.

I had an ex firm fold up some 0.9mm SS into channel 75mm wide with 7mm legs. I mitred the corners and tacked them up, and plugged and screwed to the concrete base. The only problem been there is a 450mm dia inspection cover bisecting the border. So I cut the lid so I didn't have to mess with the border and brazed a strip of 0.9mm SS to the sides.


The lid was painted in pitch so I thought I'd shotblast it off. Only I had forgotten I'd cut the 1" bore pipe going into the main w/shop. Turning on the compressor in the other w/shop, where the blast cabinet is, I was unaware of the total devastation the flailing hose was doing the the main workshop joined to the house. To say I was in the dog house was an understatement. Not that it did anything to her stuff Besides I was working on the house, sometimes you can never win.

So with the lid cut and the Stainless strip marked and brazed on it fits a treat, just waiting for the Resin now

Our lass wasn't happy, 300ltrs at 150psi dumped out of a 4 foot long 1" bore hose with a Stainless steel T and two brass barbed hose tails on the end, would have made a bit of a racket.

It battered the ceiling a few times, and smashed the door casing

They do look like Rice Crispies, don't they. Bloody expensive ones at that.

Every thing seems to cross the pond sooner or later, I first saw this sort of pathway in Florida over 20 years ago,How are they for durability, i have seen claims that they can be laid over existing surfaces?

Unsure, the company laying it says it doesn't require sealing, so they only use enough resin to bond the pebbles together and to adhere it to the sub-base. I think it will just end up full of dust, so when they lay it they can seal it.

So long as the sub-base is stable then it can be laid over just about anything

I've seen been on jobs over 30yrs ago where it was used, I think it just coming back in again. Not my first choice but the porch is not sq, so I couldn't of used a 90* cornered tile as it would show the error. I have been looking at roundels but couldn't find one we liked or for reasonable money.

I turned up to do a second fix on a new build in Dartford to find the concrete paths covered in Correx and was told it was to protect the Rice Chrispies. Later I went back to do some training and client's movers had gauged parallel lines in the surface with a pallet truck, looked a right mess. Been accountants they insisted it was repaired not replaced, they now they have two lines of slightly different coloured Rice Chrispies and it still looks a right mess.

Nice job. Is this resin bead stuff supposed to be permeable ? Good point about it being a dust trap though.
(I notice there were no pics of "the devestation the flailing hose caused" though )

Most of these finishes are nothing new. There are only about 3 or 4 types of "resin". they are mixed with fines and sand then papped down with the promise that they will stick to anything. They can still crack if what is underneath moves.

SBR and some beads with sand /cement..........a quick float at the right time, bobs yer unc.

I did take some pics of the ceiling and door but lack of contrast of the white paint made them come out naff, Pity I can see them well enough
