Masking tape on fresh paint

I am trying to finish painting the rest of my car but being stuck for time and facilties I need to be fast about it.

I need to effectivley do a 2 tone. Just wondering how long I should leave it before I can apply some masking tape to the paint so I can lay down the other colour? Dont want to peel the tape away when I am done with the paint attached!

Its cellulose by the way - if it makes a difference.

I am by no means an expert! Bikes I have done I have usually left overnight before masking on new paint, but have masked celly when touch dry with no problems. One tip use good quality tape and dont leave it stuck on too long. Hope thets of some help...

Get the 3M blue low-tack masking tape as used by professional car detailers.
It doesn't leave any adhesive residue behind when removed.

let it cure overnite if possible, then mask-up using a low tack tape, you may also want to consider soft eadging your masking so you dont end up with a step in the paint.

if you are painting a design on fresh paint then you really want something like fine line tape i wouldnt use general masking tape for the design edge its too thick and will leave a nasty edge

I use 3M tape fineline and normal, not all masking tapes are equal i'm afraid, cheap ones leave the glue behind and also leave a witness in the paint.

Thanks for the comments guys - will get some of the low tac blue tape and some fine line tape.

I need to put a diagonal line across the car seperating the 2 colours so I cant really think of any way of avoiding a step in the paint - was going to go beyond the divide with the first colour and then let that cure and tape up and do the second colour to get the line - cant really think of who I could pevent the step from happening? Shuldnt be that prominent through should it?

3M isn't necessarily the best. I used the cheap fineline tape that my paint shop sold, so did most people. It was more plasticky and softer.

Not sure what paint type your using but do 2 tones with basecoat and then lacquer, I guess you could pinstripe the edge to lose the join.

Paint the lighter colour first and then go over with the darker. Use the fine line tape and mask the rest with paper and tape. After 30 mins to an hour you should be able to remove the fine line.

When you spray the darker colour dont put loads on near the tape, use your eyes and do enough to get the colour. This was you paint step will be small. Use a scotchbrite on the edge just to take any standups off it.

When you put your clear on cover the paint. Wait till dry and rub the area down with a scotchbrite, re coat, scotchbrite and recoat. USe 1500 or 2000 to clean the area up and polish.

Do this over the paint line and you will have no paint step.
