Masonry Paint and Schultz Gun

Would like to give the inside walls of my garage the once over with some white masonry paint.

The garage is constructed from breeze block and would imagine it's tiresome to apply with a brush and get it into all the little holes.

Was planning on spraying it using a Schultz gun but can't find any empty tins to use.

The other option I thought of was to extend the paint tube with a length of pipe and just dip this in the paint tin but not sure if gravity would stop this working

My other thought was to pop round the local bodyshops and see if they had some empty gravitex tins, make sure the dregs had hardened and maybe use them, or have I just answered my own question?

or get a cheapie ebay 2.5mm gravity gun...think the shutz gun would waste alot

I painted my offices with just a few rollers. Raw breeze block walls 8' high and about 90' long. For the first coat I diluted the pain a bit. Just a cheap roller on a brush handle and it works really well. Pretty fast. I needed about 3 or 4 coats.

If you spray with a shutz gun be prepared to clean the overspray of everything else in the garage! It's also very hard to get an even coat with a shutz gun.

I would suggest you buy a hairy paint roller suitable for painting pebble dash. Use a good quality masonry paint like santex, crown or dulux from a proper paint shop ie not B&Q or Homebase! Thin the first coat with up to 20% water & apply, pressing hard on the roller.

If its for inside walls cheap white vinyl paint will do you,put a thin down coat on 1st,as turbo said roll it on,use the cheapest sheepskin roller you can get

The girls at the yard here wanted to brighten up the inside stable block, they were taking hours to just paint one wall and being concrete blocks all the little imperfections were just hard work to fill with paint. As the compressor is within easy reach I bought this huge £25 gravity/hopper feed spray gun off ebay.No paint dilution needed even if its that thick gloopy trade emulsion and you really need to use one to appreciate the amount of wall you can cover in less than five minutes. Highly rate them, a friend borrowed it last week to paint around his pebbledashed bungalow hence the state of it.


Edit: the only criticism is they have no lid so you cant put them down without tipping out the paint, probably worth making a rest if you have lots to do.

They did twelve 12x12 stables ,two lose boxes, the toilets and the tack rooms in a week.

I used a underbody gun to do the outside of my pebble dashed garage and to get behind the gutter and toilet down pipes just thinned it a little with water

A guy I knew painted breeze block walls and that increased the noise level inside his garage. The paint sealed the surface of the blocks and reduced sound absorption.

I occasionally use a schultz gun but only for stone chip and I would call the comparison a water pistol vs water cannon, that said its probably better for getting in inaccessible places. I dont think a hopper full of paint which is about a gallon will last a minute .There are some more walls to do here so as seeing is believing I will in coming weeks stick some paint in it and do a small vid

I sprayed a lot of our house (internally). We had a lot of wooden panneling, and it was great for getting in the grooves, and so quick.

I just watered down the (water based) paint a fair bit, and did a few coats. Id certainly do it again.

This was interior paint, through a standard cheap gravity fed gun.

is it a first coat onto bare blocks or are you painting over old paint ?


if they're bare blocks the first coat needs to be 50/50 paint/pva glue

otherwise it'll all be absorbed into the blocks and you'll end up painting them again and again

50/50 with pva for the first quick coat and then one coat ontop


normally for the first coat I use whatever white-ish paint I have lying around



breeze blocks are surprisingly easy to paint with a roller and it covers pretty quickly/easily - didn;t believe how well it worked until I saw it for myself
