Massey 20e ignition

I need a new ignition barrel for my tractor as the key just spins round. They look very generic but most of them seem to be 4way with 6 terminals like this:



This is definitely the same type of ignition as mine but mine looks like it has more ways and definitely more than 6 terminals. I can't see any part numbers either.



I've no idea what all the cables connect to as I've not started the refurb yet but still want to use it for the time being. I assume it's just off/on/heat/start so maybe the generic 4way would work with spare terminals piggybacked but ideally I'd just like a straight replacement for now as I know it worked!
If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated thanks!

Cant see why it would need the five position switch but its a durite 035108 , the only thing I have ever fitted one too was a dumper.

I can't either Bob it was more the number of terminals that made me question! There's definitely more wires to connect than a standard 4 way ignition will accept? The wiring actually looks reasonable and like it's not been butchered like some, but you never know after 40 years! I'm planning on a minor clean up/refurb when time allows but would still like to use it in the mean time.

If it works replace like for like, the dumper I fitted it too had a glow plug module.

If, "IF", it is a 4 position switch, off, on, sprung 1st, sprung 2nd,
then your teminals will be: power, ign((gauges etc), flame start(heater plugs), starter solenoid

Get an ohmmeter , find out which terminals are zero resistance ( ie connected) in each switch position AND which aren’t. Do it logically, draw up a truth table if necessary. Should be easy enough to connect correctly once you know …

edited. Ps some systems have three engine starting connections on top of accessories and off, namely. heat, start and a combined heat/start position .

I think his problem is more that there are four wires going onto what looks like one brass connector on OE switch and he only has two spades on that connector on the new one.

That's it. Also the key just spins round and round so doesn't engage any position making checking in situe difficult. Hence the desire for a direct replacement. I think I'll label the wires and take the old ignition out and have a closer look. One of the connectors is not used and I can't make out how many connectors the mass of wires are covering up in my picture. Cheers for the help.

Have you pulled the barrel out? It might be just the barrel broken off at the end where it goes into the switch. If you can remove it, try turning the switch with a screwdriver, a new barrel should be obtainable I would have thought.

I would also consider what you are buying, the market is flooded with cheap Indian switches that have copper/brass plated terminals and contacts. Last a fraction of the time of the original. The forklift that lives out eats the things.

It looks like the ones used on some Caterpillar fork lifts, they used to go the same with the spinning barrel.

cheap enough to just buy a new one....forget the barrel....
quite a lot of the tractors I worked on had double connectors to the wiring terms....
u only need batt supply in.....ign on.....pre heat and start terms.....
