Mastic putty bead roll?

I'm stuck trying to find black mastic putty about 10mm diameter in a roll covered in grease proof paper. It's to seal the body to the chassis of my Renault. It needs to stay soft rather than glue the chassis to the body permanently.

Does anyone know what it's called or what it's used for? Or even where to get hold of it?

Used stuff like that to hold the tail light lenses and windows in in my Mustang. Stuff is like tar and nasty to work with.

Wish I remember what it was called, some sort of "Plastic Sealer"..

By 'eck, I remember using that stuff on a kit car back in '82!

Can't recall what it was called though...

Edit: a quick Google shows that 3M make a 'strip caulk' that comes in 1 foot lengths, maybe this is as close as you can get now? I haven't found a UK stockist yet though...

We used to use a similar sort of stuff. Black like plasticine you could mould it with your fingers if you wanted. We used it for sealing the glass sides of water flow channels. The stuff we used was called prestick (no idea of how to spell the name) and it came rolled up between greaseproof paper. If you don't have any luck I can find out after the Easter break if that's any good to you.

If you could find out what it was that would be most useful. I googled a few variants of the name but not a lot showed. Stip cauk would be handy to have - used to use it at work, but it might be a bit thin.

Last time I used roof and gutter sealant. That was really messy!

The only one I know is DumDum.
This is not supplied in lengths as you describe, but comes in a tin & you work it like putty.
It's black non-setting mastic I used it to seal the fixed glass panes in my Landrover.

When I rebuilt my Series 2 Landy, I emptied and cleaned out a decorator's caulk tube (water based stuff), and filled it with DumDum, then cut the nozzle to give me the appropriate sized bead. It may be old fashioned, but it works well, never goes hard, and any residue comes off with white spirit.

we usd to use a product called arbo seal,came on rolls looks like 5 lines of plasticene,was mouldable ,used it for flange and joint sealing .seems to be a lot of different types ......try google Malc

A lot of roof/gutter sealants are butyl sealants, non setting mastics...

Might be worth a search under 'Henkel' -one of the big nams in sealants/adhesives.

I know, I just googled butyl sealing strip -, but I thought it might be worth putting up the site cos it's 3m and they supply all sorts of other goodies (like scotchbrite, for instance)

I ordered the stuff from Car Builders Solutions in the end - just the right size. It's very sticky so if bits don't fit perfectly the two surfaces just need to touch the sealant and it'll spring out with them as they pull apart.
