yea if you give them a good coating of varnish or a waterproof coating

You can get waterproof MDF but it isn't cheap.
Personally I'd just go caberfloor and varnish it, its moisture resistant anyway.

Or fork out the extra for moisture resistant MDF (about £20 for a 4ft x 2ft piece on the high st)

it depends on what you mean by damp

any type of wood will be affected by damp

becareful with trends being protected they can be slippery

is the dampness within the air or floor or even the wall its being fastened too

Find a tree surgeon and ask for conifer poles in the length of your treads, rip them up with chainsaw into 1" boards. Near enough free and will last a lot longer, and look better.

I found some moisture resistant green MDF 8 x 4 sheets used as a temporary stage for £15 each on market place, they had very little damage, I made all the shelves in my pantry out of them and a short run of stairs it has been fine but it is painted

If the stairs in my local builders merchant are anything to go by then MDF will last fine. They are inside a large shed so don't get directly rained on but there's a lot of wet boot traffic up and down.

Scaffold boards or as @Kram says some Douglas fir. I got a local sawmill to cut up some as we asked him to cut the stringers as we wanted some 12"x2"x6m lengths. Turned out really nicely.

Tom the neighbour who did the work did take them back home to run them through his planer, sander and bull nose router.

you will be fine to use standared staircases

thats made from wood or mdf

as many are used in airborne damp buildings even the builders merchants

No one comes here for a cost effective, simple solution
