So another media question

Crushed glass is this the same as glass bottles etc (I.E Glass beads)

I saw on rtb's pictures i think not sure on his albums he made a glass crusher and i wanted to know would it be ok using glass bottles if i crush them up fine??

glass beads have been honed into spheres and smooth . crushed glass is what it says and is quite sharp and jagged

aparently rtb crushes his own glass as a media and it can be bought . wether its a viable prospect time wise i dont know id rather just buy expendable abrasive as its quite cheap where i live

Glass grit is recycled container glass (bottles to you and me), glass beads are made from new glass (AFAIK) by melting it and causing something to splash into the liquid. The resultant droplets are heated as they fly through the air where they form spheres.

As for crushing your own? I made a machine out of a couple of lawn mowers but it didn't last long! I'm slowly building a more substantial one but it's more for the sake of doing it than economics, especially as the Council have just started a glass collection so my supply of bottles has dried up.

You can buy glass crushers (aimed at the pub market) and Krystelline do quite a range. If you could get the glass it might be an intersting sideline.

Could you not get a plastic box with a hole in the top with a hammer and crush the glass that way?

I used a washing-up bowl to experiment with and it is hard work to get a meaningful amount. I latterly used an upturned propane bottle with a hole cut in the bottom (top) and a Wickes post hammer to crush the glass, very hard work.

The best results were from a sink waste disposal unit, but the plastic housing soon wore away and the duty cycle is too low.

I have since built a unit based on the waste disposal unit, consisting of a cut-down CO2 bottle with a trailer hub welded to it. The stub axle has a lump of steel (blade) welded to it to bash the bottles, with a motor driven pulley on the outside. Works very well, could do with a flywheel and some hardfacing depositing on the blade.

Yes
No

Crushed glass is used for getting rust & paint off to leave a surface suitable for coating, glass beads are used to give a nice finish to a clean surface, prior to polishing and buffing if needs be.
