We are lucky to have a multi skilled tutor at our shed, one of his skills is chainsaw carving. He's only been doing if for 4 years but he's quite good already!
This is part of a 10 carving project for a local village. This bear is going to be mounted on the wall of a bridge. (thats a trout in his paws)
Squirrel is going into a tree.
The Celtic cross is going to the Chapel for their 200th anniversary.
Local Gaelic sports club is called St Patricks so this is St Patrick holding a hurley stick & ball with his foot on a Gaelic football.
Baby duck waiting on a final coat of oil.
Ducks mother has just had her head attached, waiting for final carving & sanding.
Totem pole with a wood spirit, a squirrel & an owl. Boss not happy with the owl so its going to get more carving by him.
All the chainsaw work was done by our Tutor, Sean. He's got a new apprentice, JP, who helped on the later items. JP is a former welder & steelworker who had to quit his job after a heart attack & getting a pacemaker fitted. Very tasty worker, incredibly good at finishing & sanding which shows in the later items. Built like an ox too which helps moving the heavy logs around.
The rest of the members have all helped in the prep work (stripping off the bark, etc) & the finishing processes like sanding, burning & applying many coats of danish oil.
The whiter wood is from some fir trees taken down by a local farmer because they were deemed to be liable to fall on a main road.
The red wood is scots pine, removed when they rebuilt a local canal and were destined for firewood. Beautiful wood, looking forward to using the rest of it.
