Cam and magneto drives. Lovely and easy to set valve timing with the micrometer adjustment on the drive shafts. Mags will give you a good belt if you’re not careful engaging them on their drive splines and they rock over

shafts are hidden by the charge cooler on that engine, it’s a merlin 724 from a canadair Argonaut

Was it a merlin or a meteor. Lots of meteors gone in cars. Share the same blocks, heads and Conrods as a merlin

A few years ago we had a customer come in to the garage I worked at from Duxford IWM towing one like Tinbasherdan’s picture , a static display engine .It was running a bit rough so he borrowed a compression tester and proceeded to remove the spark plugs and tested the compressions, finally,on the last cylinder he found no compression so he came back into the workshop and borrowed a borascope which showed him the problem , the piston wasn’t moving. He returned to Duxford and dismantled the engine to find a broken con rod . Last time I saw him the cost was over £5000 and still not finished.

My former bosses spat a rod out the side during a demo. Apparently it didn’t really change note

He also had an engine dropped in that only needed running apparently. It would cough and try to start but wouldn’t actually fire up properly. Turns out whoever had reassembled the engine had left the rings out and somewhere down the line this bit of information had been lost

must of been to get the pistons in the liners easier...unbelievable

It’s usually to stop the rings seizing in the bores if they’re being stored long term. That’s fair enough, unfortunately the message wasn’t passed on

After I posted I realised that this was probably at least 15 years ago.I don't know what it was as I don't think I ever saw it, just was told it was a new rolls royce spitfire engine.Every so often someone would come it to see if it was for sale but as it was the owner of the buildings not the owner of the business it couldn't be sold, might still be there as far as I know.

I have a vague memory of being told the Merlin engine had a problem in planes if they were flown inverted? Saw the SDI from Practical Performance Car last year at Barrington car show that has a much modified Meteor engine

I watched a program about Spitfires a couple of days ago, namely one that was being restored and converted to dual seating. They spoke at length about the Merlin in it and reckoned it was over 100 grand for a fully rebuilt unit.

That sounds a bit steep, is it correct?

I have heard about this story but thought it was an old wives tale absolutely brilliant and bonkers all at once
