Mesh types

I have been asked by a lad involved with the scouts to price up making an angle iron frame with mesh on the top to sit over campfires, to allow kettles, cooking pots etc to heat without sitting in the fire. What type of mesh would you recommend for a job like that ? Getting hot and with a heavy pot sitting on it ? He said someone made some before with a mesh that looked like a steel sheet, that had slots punched in it and then "pulled" to make the mesh.

Sounds like expanded metal, Available in all sorts of grades/thicknesses

something like this? its called expanded mesh. it comes in different thicknesses. this is fairly heavey gauge stuff

Anto, any idea of the cost of a sheet of that ? Who stocks it ?

not sure about cost i got a load of offcuts off a truck bodybuilders near to me. where are you based? I'm sure someone here could recommend a place close to you

I get 8x4 sheets of expanded mesh 3mm thick from FH Brundle for around £38. They are UK based, not sure if they have a depot in ROI but any decent steel stockists should be able to supply you. EBay is also worth a look especially if you don't need a full sheet.

if your just after a decent sized off cut then it would be worth mentioning what you want it for as you may get it for less money. as to me that sounds like a good cause.

Expamet is what you're after. I'd happily send you a couple of feet but it's readily available, cheap at any builders yard. The above chunky iron would weigh a ton, take ages to cool etc. If it's only a short span and the angle iron keeps it supported around the edge, Expamet would be the way to go remembering you have to lug it around a field. Tempting to put a hinge on all three legs so it folds up too...

Thanks again all. As far as i know these grilles will be kept at one campsite, and won't be carried far, just moved around on site a bit. I need 8 off 2 foot square pieces, so one 8' x 4' sheet is all i need.

most suppliers should have it in stock. I normally go to the local trailer builders for stuff like this as they will cut it up for me or let me go through their scrap pile for a few quid cash

Anto, your lucky, up here they just want to flog you stuff and get you gone. I did ring a few places today for expanded mesh, and its expensive. A much cheaper option that i have suggested is simple using 8 or 10 mm round bar, which is as cheap as chips, instead.

there's 2 suppliers close to me. one is very obliging if your buying stuff off them and need it bent or cut or even want a root in the scrap pile. the other place is buy a full lenght or sheet or nothing, they charge a fortune if you want it cut aswell.

The only reason I knew one of the trades names is I just fetched a ten metre roll of it out of a skip!
