mess free method to mixing paint?

Hi guys, ive been getting into doing some painting recently with a proper spray gun setup but im having problems when mixing the paint with thinners as I cant seem to do it without some paint running down the side of the tin each time as they have no spout.

So does anyone have any methods they use for a non spill way of mixing? I just dont like seeing paint going down the tin and on the floor where its no use

put some newspaper on the bench or floor where your mixing / tip the paint in to the pot and use your stiring stick to pick the drip up over the edge and drop it in to the pot

just pour fast first so no spills the stop slowly so you dont end up with it running down the tin

use paper strainers ...theyre funnel shaped

We had this before and the commonest way is to make a V of 2" masking tape on the top of the tin opening. It works for me and many others.

I managed to get a 50ml syringe from a (very) friendly nurse it was perfect for sucking the paint from the tin and squirting it into the mixing cup and made it very easy to get exactly the correct amount measured out. It cleaned up with thinners after and is ready to use again. Depends how mach paint you want to mix at one time I guess.

I am surprised. I know oil and other hydrocarbon products killed old syringes. When I was about 5 I was mixing some diesel for my model plane[one of my prewar diesel engines that never ran]. I sucked some oil into the syringe and couldn't push the plunger in, the rubber had swelled instantly! It woudln't have surprised me if paint did the same. What do they lube the rubbers with, it feels very silicon like?
If you want a lot, pour fast should do the trick, catch the dribbles with your mixing stick. If you don't want a lot, use your mixing stick, dip it in the can and make like your eating spaghetti.

cnrb I use a vintage Glass Syringe to do this stuff. On the way it is a veterinary Syringe.Expensive but I am lucky, as a friend of me work for a Vet!
This one are from stainless steel.
The glass one is also rare but you can wash and clean it easily !

It will work George!
The issue is that it is disposable.The Glass one, you can use it many many time.If you come across one, cheap in a boot sale grape it,worth its cost

You can use those syringes as least 10 times before they pack in,just cos it says disposable doesn't mean use once and throw away.

Other than this type he could use a suction pump,plenty of those on ebay.

As Snoop says, quick tip. When tiliting back there's some runs but just wipe up with a bit of kitchen roll.
For v.small amounts I use stainless spoons, mixed up in anodized pudding bowl things.

I usually chop the bottom off a paper mixing cup and use it as a ladle.
