Metabo Air Impact Wrench?

Hi

There are a couple of 32mm nuts that I need to undo on an ATV transmission. I rang the dealer and they said they use an air impact wrench on it. Although I would like to wait for a good brand used one on ebay, I really need to get these nuts off now.

I was looking at the cheap air impact guns available, and thought that the Metabo one from Screwfix might be better than the unbranded ones or similiar. I don't really understand what to look out for on the specification when buying impact guns though e.g. speed settings.

Can anyone give me any advice on what I should get, and their opinion on the Metabo one at Screwfix for £49.99

look out for the maximum torque of the gun higher the better cheap ones are only a low rating and wont pull the skin of a rice pudding something like 827nm or as higher ft lb torque as u can aford

The Metabo one I'm looking at only appears to have 365NM of torque.

I mainly use my compressor for air cutting tools and sanders, and I don't even use it that often for that. So really I didn't want to spend much as I'm hardly going to use the impact wrench. I would normally look on ebay and find a used blue point one or something similiar, but with ebay that is always a waiting game. I suppose I'm willing to justify only about £70 or £80 on one really.

365nm is not great at all. but if its got the metabo name on it then it will be good quality, but not powerful.

for £70 - £80 then i would go for the metabo one as everything else for that money will be ****.

Would it be better in that case to buy the Screwfix £29 or Toolstation £25 basic impact wrench instead, and then look out for a better quality one in the future? The basic ones are 230 ft/lbs, the Metabo one is 270 ft/lbs . Although you get a set of normal impact sockets with the Metabo one and nothing with the basic one, I need deep impact sockets anyway.

I also need to buy a 32mm deep impact socket. As the sockets seem to be about £10 each and a set of 11 or 16 is about £40 it seems better to buy a set. I am looking at one of these two sets, does anyone have any opinion on them, I'm not really sure if there is any difference in quality between the two?

If those 32mm nuts are really tight its very doubtful any cheap nut gun is going to remove them. Better option would be to find some way of stopping whatever the 32mm nuts hold together from turning, and undo them with a long breaker bar with a piece of tube over it if required.

clarke (machine mart) sell electric powered impact wrench's,i've used the 110v makita versions at work ,for around £60-70 you should at least get a reasonable torque 400n/m,,,,,to get to 800+ you would need 3/4" or 1" drive air impact wrench....i've no experience of the clarke cheap corded impact wrench's though......

That's my take on it too. ^^^ I have a 14cfm comp (FAD 9cfm) and an "ACME" impact wrench rated 450ft/lb using a claimed 6cfm. It won't even come close to taking wheel nuts on torqued to 50ft/lb.
I firmly believe that unless you have a very good quality tool and a surplus of free air to drive it, then you may as well not bother.

if you only need the gun to take off a couple of nuts then cant you just take the transmission to a garage?

if you turned up on my door i would rattle them off for you without charge.

from what your saying it sounds like you dont need a impact wrench except to do this job.

I've got the cheapy Screwfix gun it's lasted 3 years of hard use. It's exactly the same gun as supplied by Machine Mart

It's never failed to get a nut undone yet. That includes a 35mm Crank bolt that it notoriously tight and they loctite it in at the dealer/factory.

Just wind the pressure up to max.

Seeing as how you only need to remove two nuts, do you know anyone who you could borrow a torque multiplier from, not the cheap ones for truck wheel nuts, but a decent one such as Norbar ?

A multiplier will shift fastenings impact wrenches balk at.

The look on someones face who has been riving at a fastening for hours using a 10ft bar and 20 stone Fred swinging on it is a picture when the thing comes undone just using a 3ft breaker bar and torque multiplier

I went into town today and bought the Toolstation one for just over £25. It obviously feels of low end quality but seemed like the best temporary solution, and then later on I'll try and find a second hand Ingersoll Rand or Snap On one on ebay or something. But I doubt I'll need one much in the future.

The two 32mm nuts that I needed to undo are on a Quad CVT transmission. At the beginning of the week I ordered two different types of Sealey pulley holders, neither fitted though. The difficulty is holding each pulley to use a breaker bar. In the end the cheap air wrench was the best option as the nuts are only torqued to 115 N.m.

I bought a drapper 32mm deep impact socket, but after a few hits with the impact wrench I'm beginning to think the Sealey Wall Drive impact sockets might be a better idea for the future?

Scaffold pole/gas pipe from a scrap metal yard (£5 for a 6') and breaker bar.

Can you fit in an impact driver and enough room for a lump hammer? If so, get a Halfraulds Pro impact driver. Mine was about £15 and worth the spends
