As some of you with have picked up, I'm slowly getting set up for casting.
My end goal is brass, but aluminium is a good interim (cooler)
At present I've just been processing the aluminum scrap that I've been saving up for ages in anticipation.
I built a "scrapping furnace" which is really nothing more than a tube, with mesh over the bottom, suspended over a water bath.
You chuck in a load of wood, then your scrap, and light the thing up. The aluminum melts, and the steel gets caught in the mesh.
As the aluminium falls into the water bath, it "freezes" and forms pellets, which are then small enough to fit into a crucible for remelting and casting.
I'll load up some video another day. Its very basic, but also impressive, if you were / are the kind of kid who liked burning stuff.
Anyhow, tonight, by mistake, I just managed to peletise a small amount of brass. I have no idea what alloy it is, but, to me, that's quite an achievement.
Well, a thread is nothing without pictures, so you will have to give me a few days, and I'll update it with some snaps.
