Metal Coating...What is it?

During my week in sunny Majorca, my eyes were drawn to various ornamental steelwork, often standing and studying them, at the same time being nagged by t'other arf.

The steelwork coating had the appearance of a grey cast iron material, slightly abrasive to the touch and appearing to offer good protection....looked very nice indeed.

Any ideas what it is and how it is applied...Spanish Galvo???

Sounds like hot zinc spray, powdered zinc sprayed through a flame and melted on to the surface,

That would make sense..did appear to be applied rather than dipped, was very common out there

Could also be hot aluminium sprayed, a bit like a mig crossed with a spraygun.

For both methods mentioned I would suspect a lot of wastage with overspray, some of the railings were on the sea front and have been there at least 10 years, not a bit of corrosion.
