MG Midget suspension top coat

Now the tub is about to go off to the blasters I'm starting on the rebuild of the suspension and back axle etc. Everything needs a good clean and coat of paint. I don't want to be to fussy about the finish but would like something that will last for a bit. The car won't be going out in the rain intentionally. So, I was thinking about doing the following:-

Degrease, electric wire brush, back to metal where I can, coat of Bonda Primer and then what?

I'm not that interested in a spray coat via comp and gun at the mo as painting will be a bit piece meal

Any recommendations for a good brush top coat or maybe a rattle tin of something?

You can get gloss black chassis paint in aresole cans from Frost or similar

I got bored of spraying things and tried some of that Por-15 stuff on various brackets on my car. It's quite interesting stuff. Needs a rough finish to stick but then forms a flexible plasticy coating which might make it a little resistant to stone chips. Really nice smooth satin finish from brush application. Will report back on performance in a few years.

In the past I've used smoothrite over primer, but that's really a bit brittle for suspension. This time I blasted and sprayed my own suspension in one hit with 2K.

rustoleum combi colour ...also branded as painters touch in the diy stores like homebase

a 750ml tin is £13 and will prob do all you want it for

takes a few weeks to harden fully but its good stuff
these bits are bonda with rustoleum on top

several thin coats work best

The best stuff to use is 2 pack Epoxy Primer bar none, Its anti corrosive and is brushable also, but best finish is sprayed, Its used on oil rigs & aircraft. Not expensive at £15 per litre plus hardener.

I have to say Steveo, the finish you get with Bonda and Rustoleom look great. I was chatting with the guy whos doing my tub blasting and he said he'd do all the front and rear suspension plus all the engine bay brackets etc for £35 so I think this, combined with the Bonda Rustoleom, should give me a good result.

BTW Steveo, how did you get the nice finish on the steering rack?

the rack is bare alloy...cheap wire wheel in a drill

Also steveo, I assume you sprayed your suspension stuff. quote "several thin coats work best"

i brushed some also , spraying is easier and quicker if you have lots of parts and the gear to do it

i have brushed some of it , if you use a nice brush and thin the paint a tad with white spirit it brushes on really nice , you wont see brush marks ..you can also leave it a week and carefully wet n dry the part and then give it a final coat for a even nicer job

i said several thin coats because its not the fastest drying paint out there , if you heave on a super thick coat it will be tacky for several days

another tip...go around all the sharp edges first so they get extra paint , you will notice most bits start to rust where the paint is thin on an edge
