Mig tip

When I changed from .08 wire to .06 in my Mig welder R Tech recommended that I leave the .08 tip in place. Would that be right do you think?

If thats what they recommend it will be fine, I am pretty sure my torch has smaller tips for 0.6 wire, I have seen wire wobble when bigger tips are used.

do you mean the tip that the wire passes through or the outer gas shroud ? It sounds odd to me if thats the case as its noticeable when a tip gets worn and theres to much room around the wire for good contact

Where did you see they recommend to use one tip for both wires, here they supply both 0.6 & 0.8mm tips.

When I spoke to technical on the phone about something else I mentioned I’d just changed to .06 wire and the guy said, I would recommend you leave the .08 tip in

Will take you seconds to change the tip
Thats why theres 0.6 and 0.8 tips hello

I’ve always changed the tip to match the wire size.
The only reason I would stay with a 0.8 was if I didn’t have any 0.6 to put on. Just my thoughts, but there must be a reason there are different sizes.

They are a (electrical) contact tip so the wire rattling around in an oversized tip has the potential to stutter. That's my understanding anyway.

Just a note about tips. I got my first spare tips from MachineMart and they worked OK.
I next got some from eBay, 10 tips and a couple of shrouds for a tenner or so.
The tips lasted for a few seconds before they melted, the shrouds, a few minutes.
Moral - Don’t buy cheap.

It is the job of the contact tip to pass the welding current on to the electrode (wire). If the contact tip is too large, the electrical contact will be poor and there will be secondary arcing which tends the cause sticking and possibly also wire jams (bird's nesting).

Use the correct contact tip - and the correct wire feed rollers and liner.
