mild or stainless exhaust manifold

I'm almost at the stage with my engine swap now that I need to start building an exhaust manifold.

My welder is a Clarke 135TE and I've got a bottle of argoshield light.

The weight of the turbo will be held up mostly by a bracket connected to the engine block + head, and thus hopefully not putting too much stress on the actual manifold.


I've previously bought a stainless steel flange for the head and one for the turbo side, but now I'm not sure if maybe i should make the whole lot out of mild steel instead.


Any thoughts?

I built a manifold for my toyota to fit during an engine rebuild. I used mild steel for mine and the welder I've got is a snap-on 130 , this is what I ended up with

I'm in the middle of the swap at the minute so I guess it'll be a couple of weeks until it's on ( don't like the cold )

I think I've decided to go mild as well - cheaper and easier.

Mine wont be anything like that complicated, however.. I've only got a 4 cylinder and I'm not bothered about equal length of runners etc. The only "special" thing I'm doing is to keep cylinders 1+4 and 2+3 separate all the way to the turbo as I've got a twin entry housing I want to utilise.

ive often wondered if it would make any difference me making a 'smoove' custom manifold for my landy TDi...

The biggest problem I had was trying to get everything to go through a 3 in x 6 in space at the back of the engine , that's how much space there is once it's in the car. Engine mount in front , power steering box at the side and back.

It did take a few weeks to actually get it all sorted and together.
