Mild Steel With Stainless Rods

Hi guys I'm. we on here and got a quick question for you guys. is it possible to use stainless steel rods to weld mild steel if so are there any disadvantages?

Use 309L if your welding stainless to mild, 316L could dilute and become very brittle and will more than likely crack.

sorry I was a little vauge in my first post I am interested in the effects of welding mild steel to mild steel using stainless rods any ideas?

just a general question really after a conversation at work today we only had stainless rods and we welded some pipe work brackets that were mild steel and we were convinced it was just as strong as normal steel welds but I just wanted a more professional opinion to back up or shoot down our thoughts.

Expense, you ought to have the right type of stainless rod to avoid cracking, 309 as said above, (310 or 312??), half to two thirds the tensile strength.

In most cases there's no point at all in welding mild to mild with a stainless rod, a mild steel rod is better.

Yes it's possible, and yes it has disadvantages - so to reiterate the answers above - 1) it may be a brittle weld, 2) it's an expensive way to do it

and I'll add 3), depending on where the finished job is positioned (outside, by the sea etc), you might get a shed load of rust at the joint and the whole thing might fall apart, in time.

Other than that, it's fine, carry on as you were.
