Miller Digital Elite not dark enough

Hi,
I have just started my apprenticeship and I have just started welding. I run the Miller digital elite inferno helmet. Its basically brand new I have dropped it once or twice as everybody does and also I have seen stuff dropped on it. My main question is the shade 13 on weld or x mode is not dark enough unless I wear tinted safety glasses underneath. I run my sensitivity at 9 (10 being the highest which is just constantly black) and I run my delay at 0 which is the fastest. Is there something wrong with my helmet or is this just a trait of the helmet. also I believe my eyes to be sensitive to light so could that have something to do with it. Also will I do any damage to my eyes but welding like this Tinted safety glasses underneath my helmet. Also if I just weld with clear safety glasses underneath my helmet will it damage my eyes.

Since you only have one set of eyes and your helmet may have been damaged i would look for another one...Bob

I know the feeling. I try not to drop mine but i have. My buddy broke his Miller DE a few weeks ago. Maybe you can get parts for it from Miller. Let me know if you need help locating them as i help out on that forum...Bob

Polycarbonate is by nature a very good UV filter, tinting it alters visible light transmission. The UV and IR filters on the welding lens are passive i.e. they work even when the lens is switched off and safety specs provide protection from accidental exposure (someone else strikes an arc while your mask is up/reflections etc).
There are various charts about which list min shade requirements for different welding processes and amperages but look at a few and you'll find they don't always agree with each other as comfortable visible light levels vary from person to person... too dark or bright and you get eye strain, if anything i'd have thought that too dark is worse in that the pupil dilates and visible light at the blue end of the spectrum (400 - 440nm) isn't thought to be that healthy. That said many (all?) welding lenses probably block virtually 100% of light below 400nm and nearly all below 450 - 500nm. Most of the light they transmit is around the green spectrum hence everything looks greenish through 'em

As said get a few others to try yours and vice versa, that'll help narrow down whether it's you or your kit. Dunno about Miller kit but Speedglas do tinted inner cover lenses that let you permantly darken the mask by +1 or +2 shades. Not much point if you're happy enough with tinted safety specs but if you have to swap them out for a clear pair to see what you're doing when cutting/grinding etc...

I'd replace the 2 lithium batteries with some good quality ones like duracell, maybe one has run low, I always keep a spare pack or two of 2032 with my speedglas
