I need an in-line regulator and vapour trap for a small spraygun. Does anyone know whether these, which are widely available for about £10.00, are any good?
Is that a regulator?
It looks like a choke that adjusts the pressure by restricting the air flow.
They will work fine as long as you have plenty of air, i.e. it doesn't drop as you're spraying, (not always / often the case in the home garage)
They can be hard to set the right pressure at the gun as this is so dependent on air flow and pressure - i.e. as the pressure drops at the compressor you should open the choke to compensate.
I'm assuming you have a proper regulator on the compressor set to below the compressor cut in pressure.
I have a small spring loaded regulator on my belt when I'm spraying and so have high pressure all the way to the belt and it's regulated there so a lot less affected by pressure drop in the compressor and lines.
Once the pressure drops to below what the regulator is set at you will still have issues but hopefully you don't get to that point.
Dcal: I do have a regulator and vapour trap at the compressor end. It is one of these:
I need to spend some time adjusting the compressor cut-off pressure and setting the regulator carefully to below the compressor cut-off pressure. At the moment, it is set as high as possible as I needed short bursts of maximum pressure for my last job.
I shall buy one of the little things and see how it goes.
Hi James,
When you are spraying set the regulator to below the cut in pressure so you can keep the amount of adjusting of your inline regulator to a minimum.
If the pressure up stream of the inline regulator remains constant it will work fine.
I have now bought and fitted one of the regulators. I have not sprayed with it yet, but just letting air through it, the regulator adjusts the pressure nicely. With the gun-mounted regulator set at 30 psi, below the cut-off pressure of the main regulator, the pressure at the gun remained stable. The compressor kept going the whole time, mind you, as it is quite small. I plan to add a separate air receiver to increase capacity which may help.
