I've got this 1 family owner (father 6mths, son 30 years) mk2 Golf GTI I want to restore. I know it's back story and am quite attached to it now. It's in my favourite mk2 colour - Helios Blue - and I know it hasn't been in any accidents apart from a low speed impact with a post on the front wing at the chaps brothers house.
It needs lots of welding and I want to learn. I've bought a welder (Sealey Supermig 140) and the gear but it truly is a case of all the gear but no idea at this stage. I'm at the stage where I'm not sure i've got the confidence to tackle it so am starting this thread to try and document and create an open diary for support.
I've watched loads of youtube videos and read lots on the forum but have no practical experience. I like old cars so figured I needed to learn how to weld.
I'm building a garage in Feb 2021 and plan to strip the car back to to a shell. Get it up on a jig and begin to tackle the jobs - work needed I can see so far
-scuttle panel
-rear valance
-repair front arches with parts from a pattern part (crusty at the bottom edge)
-likely need to repair rear arches once trims are removed
-jacking points
-hole the size of my fist in the sill
-thumb sized hole in the driver side rear suspension turret
-battery tray
-chassis legs look a bit crusty on the outer edges at the front most part but seem solid (fingers crossed I can grind that down to good metal)
Here's some pictures from the sellers house, it's been off the road for a few years now. I'll start with the good bits first..
and now the bad parts...
Engine bay - seems ok but rusty hole the size of a tennis ball under battery tray. I wanted to remove the engine to clean it all up and maybe put a different engine in but maybe now. This engine has done at least 160k but serviced and maintained well.
