MMA Training

I currently looking into completing a welding course and would love to build up to a career. I have done a bit of welding at home and by no accounts saying that i'm good. Just wondering what sort of time scale is normally needed to get to a standard for employment?

Sometimes non other than willing to have a go sometimes many years. Totally depends on what job. The term " welder" covers so much
To be fair a good trainer can take someone to a reasonable level very quickly if the pupil has the required natural aptitude. Then again I have met guys who have done it for years and you would swear they are new at the job

I have been having practicing MMA most, just because this goes with my job role better for rope access. Just trying to find out the best way to complete some training and then assessment. It seems like being a coded welder to BS 4872 standard is the best way forward?

i did a course when i was an apprentice...it was 1 day a week for 5 weeks, only about 6 hours a day and all we did was spend a day rinning beads, a day doing butt's, a day doing fillets, a day welding up the test pieces and then the last 2 days we larked about with tigs making a mess of the stainless scrap

i assume hanging off a rope to get to the welding job, or having to be lowered into whatever is being welded.

I've trained a good few student welders up to now and it's always the case that the ones that watch, listen and repeat pick it up surprisingly fast. I pounce on bad technique before it becomes habit and most,90%, are laying beads, welding butts, fillets and V.up in MMA and Mig to a fair to good standard after 16hrs tuition. It's in the mind of the learner at the end of the day and those who do things 'just to see if it works' or try to re-invent the wheel tend to take a lot longer to build up the consistency required to continuously produce good welds. Like Kent said, an employable welder comes in many forms and the guys that leave my place could walk into a basic fab shop or agri. engineers and hold their own, but it would take several years to learn and perfect the skills needed to go into nuclear or petro-chemical pipe and pressure vessel jobs.
Best advice?-learn from the bottom and keep at it till you hit the top.

Engineering has changed dramatically, opportunities that were available to me, no longer exist within the UK. Which, unfortunately, makes progression far more difficult.

Wonder if we will ever weld in space? Seriously all should think over the whole progression and top thing- decide were the final destination is before you start the journey or you end up in the wrong dammed town
Be prepared to change the plan rather than pass over a great place

Don't bother all the rope access welding work offshore has dried up, never been much use for it on land due to big firms, scaffolding and cherry pickers etc.

4872 isn't good enough for many firms. You need 9606

Probably using same method as offshore, by use of habitats, for example, hot tie ins.
