MMA Welder near me

I can get by with MMA welding on flat plate .
I have been asked to do some "build up welding on horizontal plate".
As long as the welds look good and were done by a competent person is all that is required.
What I need is a bit of hands on coaching , just to iron out any bad habits .
I have all the relevant gear at home .
Anyone up for a few beer tokens and a bit of banter .
I could give some machining help in return

Does that mean hard facing?

If not, what is the purpose? If the weld doesn't matter, the welder doesn't either - within limits.

Can't offer any help but @8ob gave me a quick 20 minute hand-holding session about a year ago and the change in weld quality was astonishing. The one overriding thing I took away from that was how damn slow you can travel and how quickly the rod disappears in comparison. Slowing my travel speed right down and pushing the rod in quickly to keep the right arc length did wonders to the quality of the welding.

they used to use bead running as a way of pre stressing trailer chassis , thats how much heat warps things . So take care.

Bear in mind boiler plates usually are certified and any welding needs to be coded or at least inspected

maybe the non pressure fire box part , not sure thats tested as its not strictly a pressure vessel ... just a thought ,,, sounds interesting though ,,, always like interesting jobs.

Can't offer any help with the mma, I just about manage on site myself. But having welded, or tried to weld a few steel fires, they're a royal pita, not sure if it's the carbon, or the many hot cold cycles or what but they just don't weld nice at all. Can it not be overplated?

We use watercooled plate cladders to make wear plate. You wrap a 2mm sheet round a watercooled drum, tack the plate to the drum, then set about welding. Once done you cut the Tacks and they spring flat.

If you have hydrogen or porosity that's a great place for a crack to begin.

What are the rods?

I went to a yard a while back and there was a steam roller in there having some repairs. Out of interest I had a look. They had cut quite a large piece of the underside of the barrel out and were going to build-up the inside of the remainder where it had thinned due to erosion and 'mud' sitting in it. I was quite horrified at this but apparently it was what the boiler inspector had asked for. I asked if they were using a coded welder and special rods but the inspector had suggested that they just build it up using mig! They were also having a 'tombstone' patch in the backhead and this was being done by a coded welder who would also put the piece back in the boiler barrel. Really amazed at the time but have since heard of others building-up boiler plates in an ad-hoc fashion so obviously not uncommon.

These boiler inspectors know their stuff, they can downrate the working pressure of a steam boiler if they are unhappy with the integrity of the repairs or general condition of it. Normally get pressure tested before certs, some of the testers will whack them with a sledge hammer while up to pressure. Best rods for this are E6010 ( fleetwelds)

Proving competency is actually more difficult than it sounds in the world of @Parm s ex colleagues if it goes Pete Tong.

Dunno about that bob, they're soft sure but I'd rather use a 6013 than a cellulosic rod for padding beads.

Its all we ever used at the MS company I worked at Brad and they did a hell of a lot of work on steam. The whole of Aldershots military camp, REME workshops and the RAE Farnborough were run on steam. Spent many months on strip downs, inspections, grinding out pits, welding up steam boilers, tube rolling and replacing miles ( literally) of steam and condense pipes. All of it had to be underwritten by lloyds.

In the last 30 years the whole industry has moved away from cellulosic rods though Bob, there are better alternatives.

No doubt Brad but is there any advantage in using a harder/stronger rod to repair what is effectively only boiler plate?
