More Forge work

Been a while since I last posted some work..
Well, heres a project I did to build a curtain hanger.

I first cut a straight peice of old bar to length, and then made the ends seperatly. I could have forged them on the same length, but I prefer it this way as I can adjust the angle of the swirl easier. It allso allowed me to add the rings that hold the curtain.

I made v shape between the parts, so I could grind the rest of the weld away and have a flat finnish.

Drilling aand countersinking holes fore hanging the bracket on horizontal L shaped brass hooks

And a job finished. I use spray paint, so small items like this are ready for use next day.

You can do most of this work with a good oxy torch mounted in a vice or similar

Pitty the value of wrought iron is so low, but some people will pay anything to have a custom peice of work done quickly.

I have a bottom draught forge I'm half way through making (very slowly!) from a kit of parts. All I need to do is build a speed controller for the electric fan and then build the hood and chimney. After that I need to make a stand for my anvil and my leg vice and then I can get forging. TBH it may well have to wait until after our next house move when hopefully I'll have more space to work in.

Make sure you can mount the anvil on something that absorbs vibration. Its less noisy, and probably better for the anvil too. I have mounted the anvil stand on two thick chunks of oak. An old 'sleeper will do the job too.

I will be welding a bigger forge up eventually.. but this works for small projects its a usefull tool to have around. Good luck with the move and workshop!

Actually, I'm about to have a fairly big sycamore taken down in the garden so I might get the tree surgeon to cut me a section of the trunk to the right size and just stick it on top of that.

The moves a way off yet as I've still got to finish the hall stairs and landing here, a big snag list and then find a buyer! I need a big garage as my Chevy is over 18 feet long, tis my main priority although the wife doesn't neccesarily agree! I'll post some pics up of my forge when I can clear the top off!

Why do you feel you need a speed controller? The majority of forges I have used have either a waste gate to restrict flow or better (I think) some way of diverting excess air.

A speed controler will help reduce noise and wear on the motor, and allow a more accurate control of the heat in the forge. It will however require more fiddling, and a higher cost, but overall, I would prefer a speed controled fan, over a diversion controlled fan. The next forge I build will have water cooling, now theres another whole can of worms..

Well as long as the motor isn't running so slowly that it overheats. What about a 2nd hand inverter from ebay? Or a router speed controller if you can find one.

I must admit my current forge is water cooled and has an electronic speed control! Well, one of them is anyway. The other runs on bellows.

I've got a speed controller from Maplins, I just need to build it into a box with a switch etc and wire it in. It also has a gate to control it with as well so I get the best of both worlds.
