Some time ago I made a metal log and axe ( http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/log-and-axe-project.59126/#post-727839 )

I made 2 more a couple of days ago ................ This time I used 2.5 mm rods hoping to get more welds and closer together, but maybe the rods are crook because I had trouble starting nearly every one of them. With the previous log I used 3 mm rods and didn't seem to have much trouble. All my rods are dry, but I've had them for years and there are cheap ones.

And this one ........... Not too sure if I like this one all that much

Like the cutout - I take it it's made from solid bar?

My missus saw the first one you made being thrown around Facebook on some Australian page titled 'so you think you can weld' and the picture of the first one on there, showed it to me and I recognised it instantly and now she wants me to make one for her uncles birthday as he is in the firewood business and spends every Saturday dropping trees and chopping them up to dry

Like the cutout - I take it it's made from solid bar?

No, it's not solid bar ........... just some 40 mm O/D pipe. For the cut out I just used the angle grinder, didn't worry too much about going too deep with the cuts as it is filled with weld anyway so you can't see where the blade cut. Then I had to play around with three tiny pieces of 2 mm flat and tack them into position.

Thanks everyone for the positive comments. I am certainly not the first to make one of them. As I said in another thread, I found it on the web and liked it so I gave it a go.

Brilliant! Must have been a fiddle.

You could flare one end slightly to give the trunk a bit of natural taper seeing as it's pipe

Don't worry .............. I'm onto it already. You see I have this idea about making a tree trunk with the roots party exposed and it involves some 60 mm pipe about 100 mm tall. I would cut a very narrow V out of the side and then clamp it back together to form a tapered trunk (probably only 10 mm narrower at the top) then tack some random sized small triangle bits to the bottom and then start laying beads over the lot including the roots
Only problem is I have trouble welding anything that is not laying flat and I don't want to run beads down the trunk and then stop and reposition and start again.
Ohh and when it is finished I would mount it on a nice piece of polished timber.
Or maybe I can just go back to bed and keep dreaming !!
