ohh its been 20 years since the ban of cfc's in fridges, I guess its time to find something else to worry about.... Im guessing until the machine needs regassing then there wont be a problem, as its a closed system there is no issue....my fridge is still working fine with cfc gasses in it (I'm assuming it has cfc gases as its 25 years old)

Before we all cry, is R134A or R1234 YF compatible with an R22 system? Don't some units use a hydrocarbon gas?

On a similar vain, The legislation around vehicle AC systens is a disgrace. I see so many cars that have simply leaked down over time. Serious pressure should be put on manufacturers to make better gas tight fittings. A hole in a condensor is understandable but why in gods name do I need to do an F gas course to regass a car when it wouldn't be empty in the first place if it was well made. They worry about technicians releasing gas, hello, the horse has already bolted. Grrr.

My memory could be iffy, but I seem to recall mention of R134 being the replacement for R22, with a suitable seal change.

I'd always thought R22 was propane.

Edit: According to Wiki it's actually called Chlorodifluoromethane and it does infact damage the ozone layer and is being phased out.

R134A is the dominant gas in car systems. Which being replaced by R1234YF, more toxic but much much less greenhouse effect, I forget the figures but its an appreciable difference.
R134A replaced R12 I think, but will still be in use fir years to come.
