Try do it in one pass it should be neater.settings are crucial doing vert.

I have done much vertical up and test pieces, however these were multi pass fillets. We had to do 12mm fillets on 12mm plate using .9mm wire which is widely available here. The most important thing is the root run and the fusion of the root, followed by the cap which is a weave, to get the correct leg length. have you tested the root pass and does it have good fusion and is the edge gone. You can do your own tests, once you have completed your root run, cut through the middle of the weld, put it in a press and break it. This will show if you have good penetration. Once the setting is good then go do the cap. What you are looking for is concistancy. Torch angle is also important. basically straight in for the root and up angle for the cap.
From you pic you are getting wider as you go up and the toes are slightly under filled. you need to get yourself in a comfortable position and be concistant. It is very difficult to describe the technique required to get a good result and it took me way longer than I expected. Vertical up is very much a combination of machine settings, technique and patience.
How long have you been doing vertical up, remember Rome wasn't built in a day

As said I don't mig anything other than Aluminium so the technique may be totally different but vertical up I would be doing a kind of up/down motion but not side to side for the initial pass. Aluminium is done in spray transfer mode so possibly not comparable.

No you don't weave on the root. There is the christmass tree technique. Welding tip and tricks has this method explained. The weave is only for the cap, however there is preparation to be done after the root pass prior to the cap. Mig method is quick and relatively easy but suffers from side wall lack of fusion, if not done correctly. It may look good but not structurally sound. I would start on getting the setting for your machine right for the root and confirmed by breaking the samples before you start doing the caps. remember one thing at a time. The cap i use the 'waltz' method. 123, 123, move from right to left, or left to right on the one, then two three at the toes. This also depends upon the prep from your root. You need to stay at the toes of the root to fill and to get a flat miter fillet. I know what I am saying but much gets lost in translation.
I know what you are saying Hood, for alli it works, I haven't tried it on steel to verify it it will be OK. I was taught the christmass tree method when I did my ticket, just had to change machine settings to get it to work for me. I couldn't get the root to get good penetration with the setting I was given, I finally had to crank it up, then back grind the root to get the crown off, clean the toes and do the cap. I have a newish toy so I am hoping that when time permits I will sort out some welding procedures to cover the range of materials that will be using, then will be writing them down for future reference. There are some many, down hand, vertical up, overhead, positions this then followed by the thickness of the material. Here if we get qualified for say 6mm it is valid for double to half. That is 12mm to 3mm outside those we have to do more procedures. Then sililar for Alli and S/S. The list goes on

Watch welding tips and tricks. It'll give you an idea. Your weld looks a little crowned up, so you are probably spending to much time in the middle and not enough on the toes. It also looks a little cold from here. Give your self the best chance, spend time setting your machine right, prep your steel, and then you can get down to the welding.

Problem is you cannot see much from your sample. You need to polish up the surface of the weld and apply an etching solution. This will then show up the weld area and how the root welding went. Also the focus need to be improved. Sorry

You can use nitric, hydrochloric, acids or if you have S/S pickling paste. The better the polish the quicker and better the etch will be to see how the weld went.
