depends on what your driving and if it needs a clutch or not generally the horsepower of the petrol engine needs to be larger than an electric one

Does the rotation direction match up, if so should just need to fit a unloading valve.

It's usually the means of controlling the pressure which is the harder/more time consuming bit.
If the compressor is designed with an unloader system which depresses the inlet valve then it's easy enough but normally electric setups are designed for the motor to stop.
The quick and easy solution, albeit crude, is to have a good sized pressure relief valve which blows off at the pressure you want and leave the engine to run at the same speed always pumping, just venting off the excess air.
Depends really on the sort of work you intend to do with it as you what's suitable.

One other thing to consider is the rpm of the two motive power sources. If they differ significantly, a change in pulley size may be required. In any case, check the shaft sizes as the pulley might require bushing or boring. There is very little to go wrong with electric motors: noise will be bearings or a loose pulley both of which are easily sorted.

I'd be having a careful inspection of the tank at the bottom (such as by tapping with a ball pein hammer) to satisfy yourself that it hasn't rusted dangerously thin.

I'll have a tap to be sure . There was a bit of oil in the water that came out .
The chap thought it was the motor because he's been putting a bit of oil in every now and then ,
Then he showed me the oil level on the dipstick .!!
I think the " dipstick " is the filler plug and the oil level is loads lower .
Meybee it's been over filled . We'll see .

Now you've proved the compressor runs, please refit the 16A MCB before the wiring cooks.

answer to original post problem is starting if the engine doesnt have a centrifugal clutch coz compressors are bad news to start direct drive especially if there is any pressure already up.

You need to verify that any wiring after the breaker is rated for the increased current before you can fit a higher rated breaker.
Does the motor specific FLC ratting.
Depending on what is already fitted you probably have a common 16a B rated breaker you may be able to change for a 16a C rated (slower operating curve).Without having to possibly upgrade the cabling.
But there are consequences to this as you need to make sure the earthing arrangements are ok, a simple test for your electrician to perform.

You will need to get the circuit upgraded by an electrician. The 16A mcb was installed to protect the wiring, fitting a 32A mcb will allow twice the rated current to be drawn so the wires will get hot, melt, short out then catch fire.
Get yourself a sparky, show him/her the compressor and they will sort you a SAFE solution.
