Motorcycle comms install (well re-install really!)

Having finally sourced a waterproof radio head and base unit I have started ripping out the Yaesu FT-8900R that was doing receive only service in favour of the Yaesu FT-10SR.

First thoughts are that it is quite an ugly beast! The head mounting arrangement is really poor so that will have to be improved. Base unit is quite small but again with a daft single home mounting arrangement. This is going to be a trial! Oh and it has an SO239 socket instead of the N type I so carefully fitted for the other radio.

Currently I am getting under her skirts to do cabling and I will do an AUX connector mod to the BC radio whilst in there.

Just looked up the specs, it's certainly got some good features, will you be using the bluetooth function?

It has the Bluetooth module but don't think it will be useful. I already have the Starcom system and the iPhone linked and you can only have one link active at a time.

AUX connector fitting. I decided to install a power feed for small accessories too. The only feed I could find was a permanent live that according to the manual, was unfused. Just in case that was correct (don't believe it) I have installed an inline 5A fuse. I couldn't find a panel mount 2.1mm connector so will fit a temporary line socket for now.

Which unit are we discussing? If the BC receiver, then the AUX connection makes all sorts of options possible although there is nothing on DAB to interest me, particularly at the low bitrates it uses.

More interesting if it will fit into the cubby is an original Echo Dot. The only issue is how to interface the mics to the intercom unit.

It is the factory fit Becker Professional 2000. No controls apart from CD EJECT so any other replacement is difficult to fit as it needs to work with the handlebar controls and central controller.

They were going to but then realised that it would alienate just about everyone, so plans were quietly shelved. I forsee DAB being a short term stopgap and everything we currently receive on radio or TV will be streamed in the not too distant future. Broadcasting has really changed in the 33 years I have been in the business already, the rate of change is bound to accelerate.

PTT switch and head mounted. I have used the standard mount for a quick solution but is is so sloppy that I will have to invent something better.
