Motorised sand sieve thoughts.....

Trying to conjure up an effective sieve for oil bound foundry sand, to use over the moulding bench in my micro - foundry.
Trowelling the stuff through a riddle is a bit tendonitis - inducing , and not particularly quick.
Thinking about suspending a ply sheet by chains from an overhead rail of Unistrut , with a vibratory unit on the ply, and a standard garden steel mesh sieve mounted in a hole in the ply ....
On the overhead rail, the device can be quickly be brought into and out of action, thus saving time, clutter, and general pestiferousness.
Anyone got any thoughts on the matter ?

Could you attach a sieve to a reciprocating saw? I’m sure I’ve seen that done somewhere (probably on YouTube!).

When on building sites many years ago, a very simple frame was used - an upright wooden pole with a wooden triangular frame on which the standard round sieve was placed. The upright pole extended above the sieve. The frame rested on a couple of stakes and a cross beam. It was knocked up, nailed together in minutes on site. Sieve filled with sand and upright rocked back and forth. Tons of sand were sieved this way without that much effort. Sometimes keeping it simple is best!

What can you cast in your micro foundry? size and metals? asking for a friend....................

How much are you looking at sieving at a time? Is the material dry, will it bind up during sieving? What particle size do you want after sieving, is there an ideal size you don't want a particle smaller than?
If after a specific particle size then look for a laboratory vibratory sieve system.
If just sieving lumps of stuff out look at a rotary sieve, how about hiring one?

could you bolt it to the plywood (the part where the sandpaper attaches)

I see the lab sorting sieves use similar.
This would hang down from overhead on chain or ropes, shouldn't xmit much vibration to the frame work/ceiling

Sounds like you need a fluffer for your sand it is dropped onto a spinning plate with nal
Ils bolts ( whatever ) sticking up that pulverives any lumps and airiates the sand

Decades ago I made one for sieving soil for the garden.

Unlike the first 2 links by @gaz1 I used an old electric drill mounted on a 'bridge' over the sieve frame and an eccentric in the drill chuck.
The sieve frame was hung within the static frame with old bed springs. In fact the whole edifice was made from an old bed - angle for the frame and the springs to mount it.
I used plastic mesh which survived surprisingly well.
A critical variable was the slope of the sieve.
Too steep and there was too little time for the clumps to break up.
Too little and it blinded, had too long a residence time and needed manual encouragement to discharge to oversize.

Based on my experience of my days playing with LARGE screens on the mines. This sort of thing:

Although they were mounted on pneumatic springs and the whole motor and eccentric was mounted on a bridge over the screen.

My casting knowledge being confined to making the two halves of a padsaw in metalwork c. 1967 do you need to sieve the sand or just break it up?

EtA: Don't try mounting on old valve springs. Been there, done that. Much too long and insufficiently rigid in the horizontal plane. The sieve flopped about alarmingly and seemed determined to shake itself apart. Bedsprings mounted horizontally as they would been originally worked perfectly. Years of making beds to withstand horizontal jogging actions aren't to be overlooked.

Up to about 4 kg at a stretch in aluminium.
Furnace can do bronze , but the casting techniques are a bit exotic.
Casting fins is difficult, but a useful exercise....

Part of the situation is that the whole setup has to be extremely compact, and able to whizz through about 5 - 10 lbs of previously mulled and reconditioned oil sand in short order, and with excellent deployability.
The fluffer idea sounds very useful , and a variation upon a disintegrator arrangement....
It would work, but like all foundry stuff, it's a rare old learning curve...

Think that the fluffer , or even a powerful garden shredder would do that reasonably well.
Oil sand clumps aren't much tougher than sugar cubes.....

How about a 13" diameter steering wheel? I could make a pattern of sorts. the metal bit, not the wood!

I'd need to knock up a moulding box of an appropriate size , but it doesn't 'look' too difficult.
As ever , the devil will be in the detail...

I will think about making a pattern, shrinkage is not an issue , I will start with the original bit I have left and add some ply, body filler, paint, etc. maybe an outer magneto chain cover as well!
I have scrap alloy wheels and some other new BMW suspension uprights in what must be a good quality alloy.........................

Dave, I have successfully used a long handled fine plastic kitchen sieve bolted to a frame over a bucket with a small motor and an off center flange on the frame giving a lovely vibe & results so long as the casting sand is dry . I was able to drop a 10 kg bag of silver sand through it once I'd got it dry enough in about 40 minute when I made my initial casting medium.

Added ( Old food processor big chopping blade set 2 min per jug) wizzed up fullers earth cat litter to get a fine binding powder which was also sieved as above . I wetted the medium too much and it went sloppy had the ideas of then whizzing this & added a tablespoon of cheap talcum powder to a fine slightly damp slop which also got sieved .

Dropped it out onto a big tray and a couple of times a day rubbed it in my hands as it dried to get a very fine powder that set very nicely when the mould was dry . I didn't cast metal successfully as the wax forms I made died as they came out the latex moulds I'd made ..will be trying again in the new year . It's sat in two 3 gallon buckets out side undercover, has set very dry but crumbles to dust if rubbed hard /
