Mounting chuck in tailstock?

Hi guys im wondering if you can help me.
Im very new to lathes (used it twice! but having fun)
I have a smart and brown lathe and im want to mount a chuck in the tailstock, but im unsure what bits i need..

You mean a drill chuck? When used on a lathe it's normally referred to as a tailstock chuck; the chuck is attached to a tapered shank (or arbor) that suits the internal bore of the tailstock ram. You need to know what that taper is for a start.
Then you simply make sure that both arbor and ram bore are clean, extend the ram a few turns and firmly push the chuck in.
To remove the chuck it is usual to simply retract the ram until the internal screw pushes the drill shank out of the taper.

It's one of these you need and a chuck to go with it, but you need the correct taper size for your lathe.

by the size of the lathe it will probably be a no 2 morse taper heres the measurments to check before u purchase one . ebay or rdg tools or chronos if u need one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_taper#Dimensions

This may help

Measure the diameter of the aperture and use the comparison to identify the taper

MT1 = 12mm MT2 = 18mm MT3 = 24mm

All arbors and tailstock fittings are sold in their MT size

There is a good selection of cheap chucks complete with arbors on ebay for less than a tenner

Ebay usually have a selection of chucks, complete with taper.
As Brightspark said - Yours is probably a No2 Morse Taper but confirm before purchasing.

As you are new to Lathes - TAKE CARE - search for online tutorials
Basic safety -
Eye protection
No loose clothing (especially sleeves)
No gloves
Clean up the swarf after use and clear from around chuck during use - otherwise it will catch on the chuck and fly around

2nd on the cleaning. The pictures show a build up of swarf. This can be very dangerous, as swarf can very easily get picked up by the chuck or work piece, it then becomes the worst finger removing tool known to man.

Go buy a bush and pan, and hang it up, next to the lathe. Clean it down after use, that way you can keep an eye on wear, adjustment and oiling.

Although three types of tailstock were available for the Smart and Brown model A the most common is the 1 morse taper. This is a bit limiting in terms of sizes of drill to fit directly in the tailstock spindle but adapters are available to increase MT size 1 to 2 and 1 to 3 etc. They will use a good portion of the between centres space up though.

Not that I'd do it. But leaving the key in the tailstock chuck would be mostly harmless.

When I was working for Dowty we were told the story of one of the teams who forgot to tightnen the bolts on the counterweights on their lathe. They were machining an aeroplane undercarrige at the time so the lathe faceplate was about 1.5m diameter. The weights went through the ceiling then back down through the roof of the building next door which contained an acid bath for cleaning stuff up.

Amazingly no-one got hurt that day.

None of the apprentices ever forgot to tighten the counter weights. Although the number of people who got slow feed and rapid traverse muddled up on the Bridgeports was quite large.

Bit late to the Party.
Model M and model L are both 2mt on the tail stock and the op is an L from the look of the bed.
Interesting that the model a is only a 1mt.

Just picked this thread up in a random Google search.
Despite using the forum search numerous times for smart and brown this one never cropped up.
