Hi right I have a Murex 245 tradesmig. the welder only has 6 settings for voltage. the lowest being just to hot for bodywork (doable but in spots) . is it at all possible to make a lower setting? or adding to settings? if I was able to make a setting to have 1 good setting for bodywork that would be great

Not as far as I know as the switch will be altering taping with in the transformer. It a common problem with older fabrication type sets

Running my buzzbox on the end of a long extension lead reduced the power to allow me to use 1.6mm rods, so may work the same with a mig???????

Add thyristor control to reduce the power? Maybe an external unit like a giant light dimmer. This is not a thought through idea.

As MK says, it's a fabrication type set. It has a 60A minimum.

IMHO, you'd be ill advised to codge it to do something it wasn't designed for. Bite the bullet and get a set intended for thin metal.

I have a transmig that I modified using a variac (variable auto transformer) on the lowest range to take it from a min current of 40A to 18A. It was a quite involved modification and if the variac wasnt in my stock of parts would have been fairly costly.
May be better to sell it and buy a more suitable welder.

How does this translate to producing a welder capable of producing a MIG welder capable of a 30A minimum current without a lot of technical knowledge, expense in parts, and messing about and getting it wrong?

There's now a welder worth £250? and it seems to me that better options are to keep it and buy second hand something like a Clarke 90 if room allows, or flog it and put the money towards a machine which was designed to do thin steel and heavier material. Portamig or inverter.

If you are only doing thin stuff then sell the murex but if you want to do heavier stuff as well keep the murex and buy a low power welder just for thin stuff.

The murex is pretty bullet proof in build quality
