I have finished my weather vane, although it still needs to be painted. I made the scrolls using a tool that I bought from Metalcraft.

I bought the boat profile, the letters and the arrow head and tail from Brindley's. As it was my first project, I wanted to give myself the best chance of producing a reasonable finished product !

Good rationale - that boat profile looks a bit fiddly to make anyway. I bought the letters for mine. I guess you have had some wind in recent days to see how well it weather cocks - not sure where you are in the country? When I made mine it was windless for days!

I am not too far from you, in Milford-on-Sea, quite close to the sea, and there is plenty of wind here ! I used the "ball-bearing" trick inside the tube, and it spins very freely. The bar that the boat sits on is a hollow one, but I have a solid bar at the front where the arrow head is attached. Once I had attached the tail and the boat profile, I slid the solid front bar out until I got the balance right. It seems to be OK.
Next project is two door stops. I have got two cast iron dachshund bootscrapers bought from a garden centre. They will be mounted somehow onto a flat metal plate, and then some kind of decorative rod attached to the plate, with a handle at the top, maybe a basket or similar. Haven't quite worked it all out yet !!

Thanks for the comments on the website. Ah yes, Milford, I cycle through that way from time to time and also launch my sea kayak from Keyhaven sometimes. Good luck with the door stop project. I presume you are not welding to the cast parts - if you do beware of problems with them cracking?

Graham - No, I don't plan to weld to the cast iron dog. I am going to somehow bolt it to a plate, and then weld the handle to that... thanks for the tip though..

nice looking vane there, what thickness steel did you use for the profile and what are the rough dimesnions, i.e. from centre to letter if you don't mind me asking

brokenbiker - the profile is 6mm, and the distance from the centre to the outside edge of each letter is approx. 40cm, I think.

looks good and a tip for windless days if you have such a thing use a leaf blower that's what i used to set mine up.
