my hybrid bike project.......yes i know theres been loads...lol

right folks.
im about to embark on a potential bollock/face splitting project.

im going straight for the throat of the matter.

ive got a good start with a womans british eagle mountian bike i bought years ago for the misses that she never uses and i ended up shearing the ratchet mechanism in the back wheel by wheelieing it..ooops

ive also got a halfords full suspension outrage mountain bike thats out of action.

but the creme da le creme is my old american bmx, not stunt style, more of a kids one cos its got a chain guard. white mag wheels and tyres to match,

im strongly thinkin of using the bmx as a main part of the project cos i dont fancy tackling all that suspension nonsense.

ive got a few lengths of steel fuel pipe and other stuff im thinkin of using.

aint got a clue how im gonna start so im just gonna chop and see how i get on...

and by the way....im using a wolf arc welder.....wish me luck.lol

well folks.

its begun....

the bmx recieved some brutal spanner action and a brief encounter with my nice crisp new eclipse hacksaw blade.

its now in about 15 bits.

now comes the serious work...

i can get my hands on plenty of 3/4 steel pipe with a wall thickness of 4mm so i,ll be using this for any framework or handle bar mods.

the wolf welder has served me well for the measley 50 quid it cost me new but i still have my 15yr old hobby arc unit i bought from the littlewoods catalogue back in the late ninties and although she overheats pretty quick welding anything over 2mm, it still gives me nice stable welds on lower guage stuff.

must admit tho, the wolf for the price has seen me finish off some good projects and without too much trouble...

This is a dam fool option, there is no logical reason to build junk bikes of dubious rideability.
A slippery slope? well you are dabbling on the edge of a abyss of weirdness, the people who do this are all a bit madder then usual. People will laugh and stare and point at you. Your family may well disown you. You will become known as The Town Idiot. Of course in Suffolk they might not even notice.

Always be deadpan when riding your porject builds, never wave and smile, maybe look indignant or baffled when people stare at you, but always remember you are riding a bike, one of the most normal activities going.

You will beome obsessive about building stupid bikes, about rescuing donor carcasses, and hoarding old junk. You may even enjoy it and meet some great people through it. I have made some great friends as a result of this nonsense. These days the bikes are a bit neglected but the urge is always there.

It is also important to keep aware that it is a ridiculous business, and not let it take over and start acting all serious and manly about it. Look at golf, a ridiculous business, but how seriously do people take it. Look at the custom car and bike scenes, absurd. Fantastic engineering and workmanship, but how often do these admit that is perhaps a bit silly to cut and modify vehicles to make them less practical than they were.

Last pontification, dont spend any money on it if it can be avoided. We usually reckon on buying cables and possibly bearings new, the rest of it is rescued.
