my new compressor

thought i would share with you my new compressor, bought second hand, needs a bit of work but seems ok to me!

The second picture shows the air inlet, no filter so have ordered one along with a new crankcase breather today. dissapointing that it has most likely been getting used without a filter but function checked it and it runs up to pressure fine. time will tell. Cost me £167, it has a 3 hp single phase motor, twin piston compressor and seller thought it was around 14cfm, fine for what i need it for.

Thoughts anyone?

I'll have it for the first two weeks in June if you've fixed it up in time It looks good for a workshop and painting tool.

derbyshire is a bit of a drive to pik it up though, it weighs a ton.. well about 1/10th of a ton

Is it me or has the pressure switch been damaged ? Seems like a reasonable buy if it's not been affected by the lack of air filter.

The pressure switch has the cover missing so it is just covered by a plastic bag at the moment! Works fine but I'll replace it or make a cover for it! With regard to the lack of air filter at the moment it shows no signs of wear due to worn valves or pistons etc but te will tell! New air filter and body arrived today but it's either incomplete or the wrong part, might just making something up to suit!

Go on ebay, there's plenty of choice. You need one with a male thread which screws into the head.

Or you could go the route of using a car oil filter, quite popular around here !

nightmare... basically the lack of air filter has made a bit of a mess of the top end so, top end overhaul is underway. good news is that the crank case side including pistons and rings look in really good nick but the plate valves, air intake chamber, air outlet chamber etc are in a right mess. will post picks later.

Anyway, not to worry, the top end overhaul is underway, gonna need gaskets and probably valves but apart from that a right good cleaning and then rebuild.

Wondering if i can make gaskets myself? only problem being that all my gasket material is far thicker than the original.

Not to worried though, i'll post picks later tonight.

I feared that might be the case, bad luck. Gasket thickness is quite critical on the head as it directly affects compression. Check the piston rings too, they normally suffer in these circumstances.

windymiller, that would be great, i'll post picks if not tonight then tomorrow morning, thanks guys. Tigler.. rings seem ok at the moment, once its up and running i'll check to see if it seems to be breathing heavy at breather filter, should give a good indication if rings are knackered?

Yes, that's a good indicator. If it were me though I'd check the top ring gap in the top of the bore but I'm a fussy b u g g e r !!

Just been in to the garage and found the pressue switch cover - it's similar to these (but with a black knob instead of red!):

Internal dimensions at the base are about 75 x 44 mm, with an internal height of about 75mm. PM me your address if you want it and i'll get it in the post for you tomorrow.
