My Welding Helmet.

i should start by saying that ive only been into this welding game for a couple of months, so bare with me on the terminolgy, i dont know what stuff is called yet.

i have been given a speedglas helmet.

a number 10 aparently. whatever that means

its battery powered, auto darkening. but i havent got a battery for it yet, but ive been using it like you would a normal helmet. adjustable sensitivity by the turn of a knob.

are speedglas a good make?

the thing i want to ask is about the lens (the dark bit you look through?)

its takes a few knocks over the years ad its gone a bit colourful in the corners etc.

can i get parts for this helmet? as it is donkeys years old.

and will it be worth buying parts? i.e. will a new helmet be only slightly dearer than buying a new lensy filter bit?

Yeah Speedglas are a good make; one of the best. The lens cartridge is really the only expensive bit so replacing it is likely to be less cost effective than a new one. Mine is shade 9/13 I think and is the cheapie of the range at 100 squids. From memory it takes two batteries, not one, and they're something like C3020s (that really is from memory, I could be miles off) like you would find in a car key fob.

CR2032 in mine, so very close! As Archie says, it's only the very innards of the cartridge that are expensive -- the outer bits are cheap enough. There will be spares out there.

what im worried about is my helmet is about 20 years old. when the auto darkening ones first came out apparently. he paid £250 for it back then. hes got a super duper "optrel" one now. fancy looking thing. i think it is anyway.

so im thinking that i wont get parts for it anyway. if i take my lens thing out and measure the dimentions then its a possibility that a lens from a newer model will fit??

Possibly but you'll probably still end up spending over the odds.

Log in to ebay, type in speedglas and look for a trader called Mr Speedglas, I have had a lot of spares from Andy and is a first rate trader.
