myford lathe repair

picked one up last year that hasn't been tret well .mucky a bit rusty but half decent . some pillock must have had it in backgear to get the chuck off and bust the backgear teeth off and the one on the main shaft just took the mainshaft out and disassembled it to remove the broken gears . I got the top one and pulley of ebay 45 quid in good nick the bottom one I can repair or buy a new one for 52 quid or wait for a second hand one cheaper if one turns up .other than new belts and a re paint its good to go . it has a clutch fitted so I'm going to swap it on to my other lathe that's in good nick that's not fitted with one

I did that mod too as I had a fair bit of slop, as well as zero-able dials

those gears looks like someone engaged a gear while it was running

dont repair it get a replacement and do it once only no point doing the rapair than have to reset the bushes again isnt that the reason why we use clip on vee belts nowadays for less taking heads apart

should look as good as mine when done

I converted existing dial made my own but that was 40 years ago . cant remember how now

Is it me or does a Dewhurst switch look just right on any machine...they look as good as what there fitted to imho

Got one somewhere ready to fit. Except now planning to fit a vfd and 3p motor.
Maybe il fit it to the mill instead

Yeah they are lovely switches. Got one on my little 10.

just keep an eye out on the drum contacts .they can start arcing and can burn out. if pitted a bit of wet and dry over it and some silicone grease rubbed in

Have one too on my lathe and they not only look right they feel right...sorry Bs for thread deviation

Found some on the bay from the resurrected Myford company but priced at £942, which I believe is bay speak for out of stock. Will keep looking

Dewhurst rotary switches often get slated [by those who don't know to use them] I've had mine for over 40 yrs it's for forward or reverse & never ever use it to switch on/off that's what the mem starters for, you just switch the dewhurst on then start & stop with the push button starter thats designed for that purpose.

I didn’t know that. Mine actually starts the lathe up.

Makes sense as I’d imagine that sweep to fire it up wears em out eventually.
