Nail gun?

I need to do some repairs to my shiplap fence and trellis and was thinking a small capacity nail gun would be the best tool for the job. I think a hammer would do more damage than good and I've already tried screws and that just splits the wood. Any thoughts?

If its for 18g up to 32mm brads the toolstation one takes a lot of beating.

Not a patch on the light weight composite ones we use in the workshop but last time i looked they were in the region of £ 350.00.

I have what I think would be the Lidl equivalent to yours, fine for everything I've needed - replacement brads are available from Screwfix.

I wouldnt have said 18g brads are up to the job either, where in herts are you? I have an air framing nailer you might be able to borrow.

As I know nothing about nail guns brads etc can you tell me why 18mm brads aren't much good for fences? Would they shoot straight through?
I'll only be tacking the slats back into place so thought a 15-20mm 18g brad would do it....?

18g is the wire thickness of the nail/brad.
18g = 18 gauge = 1.02mm so very thin with little holding power.

If your only option is a 18g nailer I would use 18g staples as it doubles up on the holding power.

I've used an Aldi one for repairing fence panels, making trellis & that sort of thing using the staples, it did a really good job. The staples don't split the wood & hold surprisingly tight, they splay out as they go into the wood so they don't pull straight out.

There seems to be a gap in the market for DIY nalers. There are loads of 18g brad nailers available, some with the option of firing narrow crown staples and then there are framing nailers but nothing in between. An air powered nailer that can use 2" round head nails would be ideal for the sort of job the OP is doing but doesn't seem to be around for DIY money.

Nice but a bit of a pricey purchase just to repair some shiplap!

If I used 50mm nails they'd got right through the other side. I reckon 30mm would be plenty long enough to tack the slats back on. Can I use these staples with the toolstation / Silverline guns?

yep they do 30mm staples and feel more secure

What are these slats supposed to be fixed to ? If slat and mount are less than 50 mm it must be pretty flimsy

I have a Paslode, it busts more of my stuff than it nails haha 590Ci, Bosh air nailer before that and it was great!

It's the trellis. It's going through some timber strip about 15mm then the slats then another 15mm strip.
It's 10 years old now and starting to come apart. It's not flimsy.

In that case you need a Paslode 'finish gun' - I think mine is an IM65 iirc

That's kind of my point, it's a very nice piece of kit but it's way over £400, Great if it's earning it's keep but far too expensive for a bit of DIY.
